6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 6, 1988- Newton ville Alive by Peggy Mullan "O Canada* Our Home and Native Land!" Country-wide celebrations were truly grand all over..It was rather nice to* see places patriotically decorated and many, many "Pro- Canadian" special issues and writeups writeups and advertising, even across the border! There was no exception in Newton ville! The Annual Newtonville Outdoor Outdoor Beef Barbeque, Friday, July 1st was a tremendous success. Approximately Approximately 420 tickets made for a sold-out event. The people strolled over to the church grounds steadily from 4:00 to 7:00 to enjoy the scrumptious roast beef, baked beans, baked potatoes, rolls, desserts and more - all under sunny country skies and cheery amplified music. Picnic tables were set up, decorated with a waving Canadian flag. What a super job done by hosts and hostesses of Newtonville' United Church, members who served served up the menu and mixed with the crowd making sure everyone was happy. Proceeds go into the Church for various maintenance costs. Three cheers to all who put it together and to all who. came on * out! • Thank you Newtonvillers.-To each and everyone who looks after their property. There should be an award given weekly tp those who continue to make that extra effort to keep our fair community even more lovely..Such a little goes such a long way! Talk is brewing! There is a new; group who - recently moved into town. I am afraid so far the results are not good..furniture, clothing, you-name-it, has been strewn out and around this house for three weeks now.. To make matters worse, about three dogs take turns being tied right out front..Very recently, some residents in town have felt they are unable to walk on that side of the road.. Really..Newtonville is very happy to have new folks move into town..Honest! It is a lovely place to live and a great place to raise children. So, please, enough is enough. Let's all contribute to Newtonville family and village pride. Summer by.Neil Towler, age 9 Slcwart Road, Newtonville S is for summer school U is for umbrellas on a rainy day M is loi muddy weather M is for marigolds E is for enjoying the weather R is for relaxing by the pool! School's out and summer is here! I think most kids, at first are a little overwhelmed - they have suddenly had their busy schedules halted and for a short time, I'm sure, don't quite know what to do with themselves.. It won't take them long though! It'll be due time for all those Huckleberry Finn type- outdoor adventures all day long, and very tuckered out little bodies, hitting the hay every night.. A surprising thing I have learned with each summer out here - in the country, it is the incredible amount of work to be had, if a young lad wants it. If he wants to put his young muscles and healthy attitude into gear, he will go a long way.. It's a "Chicken-pickin," cementmixing, cementmixing, furniture-moving, grass- cutting, heck-of-a hay. day ex- 'perience if one wants to make some extra money over the summer!
