4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 20, 1988 SPORTS Orono Pee Wee Soccer add two more wins Orono Peewee Soccer players continued their excellent play this season with two more victories recently. On June 23rd the Orono side trounced a newly-formed Manvers squad 21-0. The play was not quite as one sided as the score but our defence and goalie, Cameron Esler, were certainly left with little to do. Unfortunately for Manvers our forwards picked this evening to "get it all together" with excellent passing and crossing. Newly Converted winger Richard Vernon teamed up with another winger, Brendan Bates, to score 12 goals, six each! Scott Hëntig fired five while Tyler Bates, Dan Walters and Evan Davie chipped in with one each. A Manver's player scored the other goal with what was supposed to be a pass back to the goalie. Orono faced a much more difficult difficult opponent in Bowmanville at Waverly on July 7th. In fact the best play of the evening came in the very last minute when our goalkeeper, Greg Hooper dove head first to knock a certain goal just wide of the post, thus preserving preserving a narrow 2-1 victory. Scott Hen- tig and Richard Vernon scored the goals and backs such as Evan Davies and Todd Graves played well. On July 13th the team started with only 10 players against Bowmanville 2. When Scott Hall was injured near the end of the first half we were reduced to the minimum possible. Despite this disadvantage the team played very well and actually dominated the first half. However, a quick first minute goal sent Bowmanville out front and our inability to finish the play allowed Bowmanville a 1-0 first half lead. Playing short coupled-with coupled-with some very bad luck caused us to tire somewhat in the second half and Bowmanville notched two more goals to win 3-0. Evan "Crossbar" Davies continued to shoot approximately half an inch too high and the rest of the forwards forwards were somewhat to tentative to pull the trigger. Todd Graves, Tyler Bates and newcomer Meghan Davies, played strongly as halfback and Brendan Bates and Scott Ball were outstanding on defence in the first half. In the , second half Richard Vernon handled the full back chores alone as our undermanned undermanned squad tried gamely to mount a comeback. Richard was marvellous in this position as he routinely broke up 4 on 1 plays. Cameron Esler had a lot of work in goal and played an excellent positional game anticipating accurately where the play would be. With a full compliment compliment of players and a finer finishing touch our team will be ready for a return match.
