The audience watches his live video image on a large television screen, where the harp "exists" as a computer graphic. As the mime plucks the "strings," the harp plays as if it were real. "LiveBox," a product introduced introduced by Breakthrough of Toronto, is at the beginning of a new wave of computer technology technology called "interactive real-time video" (IRTV). It is one of the featured exhibits of the Department of the Secretary of State's "Bravo Canada!" pavilion in the Queen Elizabeth building at the Canadian National Exhibition Exhibition from Aug. 17 to Sept. 5; 1988. "Bravo Canada is a celebration of Canada's geography, geography, people, spirit and in-. ventiveness, with exhibits showcasing Canadian advancements advancements and inventions. The "LiveBox" looks something something like an oversized R2D2. It is five feet high with a tapered top where the video camera looks out'at the performer performer like a cyclops. Just below the camera is a television television screen where performers can see themselves interacting with the graphics and animations. animations. When someone stands in front of the "LiveBox," their image is projected onto a television television screen with a video camera, where it is surrounded by computer-generated graphics and animations. When the live image "touches" the graphic images, the graphic reacts by making a sound, a visual change or both., The concept for "LiveBox" was inspired by dancer Vincent Vincent John Vincent of Concord, Ontario, who was looking for ways to create visual and sound effects through body movement. His idea was translated into software by Francis MacDougall, a Toronto programmer. Both the unit and the software are manufactured by Break- , through. One of the most popular of the graphic screens is a full drum set, which is one of the many scenes Breakthrough will nave set up on the "Live- Box" for visitors to sample. As the video image of a person's hands pass through the graphic arums and cymbals, they play like the real thing. Amateur musicians can play wild drum solos just by •waving their arms in the air. Another popular scene is an animation of a, ball that can be picked up, thrown against a wall, bounced and caught. As well, there will be animated birds that land on your outstretched outstretched arms and colored paint brushes that stick on your hands. Continuous demonstrations of "LiveBox" will take jilace both inside the Queen Elizabeth Elizabeth Building and outside the main entrance from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily to allpw as many visitors' as possible to try out the unit. It is just one of the wide-ranging sxamples of Canadian ingenuity ingenuity that will be on display at the "Bravo Canada!" exhibit exhibit at this year's Ex.
