2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 12, 1988 (Prono Weefelp Stmes Second Class Mail Registration Number 000368 Published Every Wednesday at the office of Publication Main Street, Orono ■* Ray C. Forrester, Editor ^SÊmmiaÊÊÊÊmmamÊimaÊÊmÊmKiÊÊÈÊÊÊÊimÊÊKÊÊmÊiÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊua^ Off And Running , The three major political parties were at the starting gate a couple of weeks ago prepared for the run for leadership at the House of Commons following the November federal election. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as odds-on-favourite at the polls and just back from a credible environmental address address at the U.N. and then showing his toughness as to party obedience dumping Sinclair Stevens had to be outfront with the opening of the gate. Liberal leader John Turner after waiting a couple of days came out with his first announced plank in the liberal program, somewhat of a rehash from the last electiôn, but nevertheless a plaudible plank to assist the lower income people people of Canada with housing. His platform building however collapsed with his next plank with a confusing day-care program program that even had his advisers somewhat mystified. Ed Broadbent leader of the NDP continued to plod . along with his people programs and seeking support in Quebec. But at the same time as we heard of the great economic growth of Canada during the past four years from the Conservatives Conservatives we also heard and read about the need of food for tens of thousands in Metro and even for such a need in Oshawa. Every organization dealing with the woes of housing continue to call for assistance to house low income families and this during an affluent time in this great nation. " The Conservative Housing minister has been reported to state that all that is to be done by the Conservativesfor affordable affordable housing is now being done and this view has been expressed expressed by others of the party questioning just where are those that sleep out on the street. Certainly its a matter of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer and where does this end and with which party come election day. Don 't forget the municipal race With the federal politicans burning shoe leather across Canada over the next while the final line-up for municipal positions will take place on Monday of this coming week. Monday is the last for candidates to register their intent as to the municipal elections. Certainly there is going to be change as to the make-up of the 1989 council with at the present time three council members seeking the Mayor's seat and with some outside possibility that there could be.others. As to date the biggest change in change appears to be in Ward two and one with few rumbles from Ward Three that the two incumbents may be challenged. But all this could change over the next few days and up to late Monday afternoon. afternoon. One of the issues is the need for industrial assessment with the hope to lighten the load oil residential assessment. Although other centres have benefitted from the GM Just In Time plan it has not been the case for. the Town of Newcastle. There has to Be a reason but it is difficult to find. Another issue being mentioned is that of town-wide garbage collection and the arrangement of letting, what some have said to be a-$5 million contract over a five year period. As we understand the contract has been negotiated with BFI leaving out other local firms who had wished to tender for the job of garbage pick-up. Council did set aside à standing policy of tendering for such work and negotiated directly with BFI. Somewhat of an unusual move for such a sizeable contract contract and especially when other interests in the community could handle the job. The garbage pick-up issue has not made it through council as yet but it is expected and will almost have to come before council prior to the municipal elections. Possibly we can look for some interest in this for- thcoming event, ' The Ben Johnson affair We don't intend to give thd Ben Johnson affair much print as it is already weighted down with newsprint and ink. There is no doubt about the positive test of Ben Johnson Johnson and certainly one would have to now believe that many were invloved in the plot to gain a position for nothing other than financial reward. Millions of dollars have been involved on the credibility credibility of Johnson and his team in promotional advertising. Its all been a hoax and a big cheat. . KENDAL NEWS. Thank you, God, for everything the big things and the small, For every good gift comes from God, the giver of them all. And all too often we accept, without without any thanks or praise, The gifts God sends as blessings each day in many ways. First, thank you for the little things that often come our way The things we take for granted but don't mention when we pray, The unexpected courtesy, the thouyghtful kindly deed, A hand reached out to' help us in the time of sudden need. The thank you for the miracles we are much too blind to see And give us new awareness of our many gins trom rnee, And help us to remember that the key to life and living Is to make each prayer a prayer of thanks And every day Thanksgiving. Helen Steiner Rice The church was most beautiful on Sunday morning. The Sunday School children had decorated it on Saturday. Their project for October had been baskets of fruit and vegetables for the men's Hostel in Oshawa. The parents had helped so there were many baskets and boxes at the front. The "Westlakes" took the baskets over, Sunday afternoon to Oshawa, in time for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving. Outside, the church looked beautiful also, as the painters had finished painting it. We were able to admire the new stained glass window, window, which had just been installed, in memory of Charlie Gay and the McRoberts' family. The choir sang, "We shall come rejoicing bringing the sheaves." I neglected to bring a bulletin home with me but I know the scripture scripture reading was Mark 10: v. 17-30. The story of the rich young ruler who came running to Jesus and kneeling he asked. "What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" Then followed the message, and the Thanksgiving communion service. Next Sunday, October 16th is Kendal Anniversary Service at 11:15 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Norman Mackenzie as guest speaker and Kendal choir to provide the music. There will be a social hour following following the service. On October 22nd there will be an Orange Lodge bazaar and bake sale from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. We were glad to have the "two ladies, who have been so ill, worshipping worshipping with us on Thanksgiving, Mrs. Margaretta Stevens and Mrs. Pat Atkins. We hope they will soon be restored to perfect health. Visitors with Mrs. Elinore Foster for Thanksgiving were her brother Mr. and Mrs. Hall of Virginia U.S.A. On Sunday afernoon Mrs. Edith Gordon and her daughter June with her husband Elmer Mumford of McCord, Saskatchewan called on Mrs. A. Cathcart, Mr. David Thrower, Mr. "Burns" Hoy and Mr. Jàs Hoy. June grew up on the Sixth Line and attended the Sixth Line School. Also on Sunday evening, Miss Bernice Winn of Orillia, and Mr. & Mrs. Tom Ai kins of Lindsay, had dinner with Mrs. G. Cathcart. Seventy-five years ago October 7th Henry Ford launched the first car. A lot of our progress has followed the invention of the motor car. Rev. Clifford Waite says, "On cur recent summer trip to Newfoundland Newfoundland 1 came upon A1 Cloustan's stories. He is one ol the best comedians who delights in the sayings of his peopel. 'Come 'ere till I tells you,' is one expression'he has picked up. One of the neighbours in Come by Chance had occasion to go to the local to pass on bad news. "Hey Ned, your house is on fire. Better come quick." Ned took another sip of his drink and casually replied, "No ' need to worry bout dat b'y. Dere'-s plenty of lumber in t'attic t'build another one." Two outpost sailors met. "Guess what's in me pocket. Come one, it begins with "N". "Napple? Norange? Nonion? No? Well, I can't guess." "Tis a negg." The Kendal United Church Women met at the new home of Mrs. Ann Dilks on Wednesday afternoon, October 5th with nine ladies present! The president Mrs. Dora Youngmari opened the meeting by having us repeat, 'the purpose' in unison. Then she read the poem, "We thank Thee for Thy widsom." Mrs. A. Cathcart read Psalm 104 which seemed so appropriate appropriate as we looked out on the hills, covered with trees, in their autumn colours. Mrs. Ann Dilks read the minutes. Mrs. L. Downes gave the financial report. Offering $27.00, soap, facial cloths etc. were collected for Auberge Shelter. Roll Call: Name something you are thankful for. Then-Mrs; Peggy Frank set up her screen, curtains were drawn and we were given a travelogue of the trip she and Ron took by motor this summer to Alaska.
