He said Eatons sold mourning mourning clothes off the rack. Jackman wetted his interest in historic dress being a former archivist archivist and researcher for the Stratford Stratford Theatre and thus has become something of an expert on death and dying. Jackman has been curator at the Clarke Museum for the past two years and told his Port Hope audience audience that as the Clarke Museum was in somewhat of a bind with possible closure something had to be done to create interest. Jackman said to create this interest interest he started an outreach program program which included wood block printing for the children . and teaching adults how to preserve old photographs and documents. In 1987 he mounted an exhibit on the elborate mourning rituals of the Victorian era which included a caf- fin and some attire from Clarke along with embalming tools from the Bowmanville museum. He said there is interest in the past and with death but it is reluctant reluctant and his display did create some objections as being morbid and unsuitable unsuitable for children. He said he used these objections to attract attention and the display gained a half page article in the Toronto Star and a section on CBC television. Attendance, he said, increased by 200 percent in the first month with morticians even travelling to view the display from Ohio. Jackman said the children showed a keen interest in all the tools and procedure and this was contrary to the fact that adults had the most problems. In speaking of childrens' funerals in the 1880s he said it required a white coffin, a white hearse and white horses and mourners wore white with some black trim. Jackman told his audience he will be re-assembling the funeral exhibit again this coming year and expects to take the exhibit on a tour of area ■museums. He said if such as the Canadian Funeral News and the federal government will supply funding funding the exhibit may be slated for a Canada-wide tour. Jackman also-stated that it had been suggested to him that he should write a book on the subject which he said "1 just might do". 3"): 1. Minnie Zegers; 2, Carol Mostert;3.
