10-Orpno Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 26, 1988 Town grants for crossing guard A plea for a cross guard at Simpson Simpson Avenue and highway 2 in Bo wmanville gained • symphatetic ears on Monday, night causing council to reverse a general purpose committee recommendation that the cross guard was not required. Staff had reported that following a study such a guard was not needed , at the intersection as it pertained to Town policy. Nancy McMaster pointed out that rural children were bused to school while urban children as in Simpson Avenue have to cross Highway 2, a busy highway, with little protection. A guard is to be established immediately. immediately. Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. Forrester: Today the Oshawa Motor Cycle Club hosted its annual Enduro through the Ganaraska Forest. I heard one dirt biker at 11:30 last evening and my neighbour heard four pass his house at 6:00 a.m. today. today. Starting at 9:00 a.m. about 100 bikers churned up the dirt, scared the chipmunks' and birds into hiding, polluted the air with choking choking fumes and roared their engines through the silent forest. Today's degradation was an official activity that has been happening once yearly. yearly. Rumour has it that the Enduro might happen twice yearly, but what"about the bikers that arrive from far and near between April and November to despoil the Forest without benefit of an official event? Ipseems that the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority's approval for the Enduro is contributing to the growing popularity of the Forest as a prime location for bikers to ride. While I was observing the bikers tearing through the Forest East, I was pleased t chat with A1 McPherson, McPherson, Chairman of the Ganaraska Forest User Committee, accompanied accompanied by Klaus Schoenmaker, board member of the GRCÀ. In the company of 2 bikers from the host Club, they were circulating to observe the Enduro. Does it seem peculiar that the Chairman of the User Committee, who assured me of his impartiality would be escorted through the Forest by two bikers? What will it take to persuade the GRCA that dirt bikes are an unwelcome commodity fn the Ganaraska Forest? Fourteen people from this area, appointed to a Board whose mandate calls them to protect the resources of the Ganaraska Forest take pride in the fact that they can provide a facility for the EndilfO- where are their priorities? Th* GfcCA appears to be a law unto itself, accountable to no higher authority, and certainly not accountable tt> the taxpayers of the community. I talked to one of the bikers who was partiepating in the Enduro. He lives in Kitchener. He comes to our quiet pocket of Hope Township to race because housing developments used up the available land near Kitchener! Kitchener! Since no other Conserva^ tion Area between Windsor and Belleville tolerates dirt bikes, no wonder the visitor from Kitchener had to come all the way to the Ganaraska to ride his bike! A week ago I talked to an OPP officer from Cobourg. He claims the trouble caused by dirt bikes is more that the OPP is staffed to handle. The situation is equally grave in the area of Hwy. 45, he says. While Mr. McPherson and Mr. Schoenmaker are gathering observations observations about the dirt bikes in the Ganaraska, I hope they will inspect the list of Enduro entries to see that the bikers arrive from across Southern Ontario to abuse the Ganaraska. 1 hope they will talk to the OPP at Cobourg. Most of all, 1 hope they will talk to each other about listening to the people in the community who take pride in a Forest that allows many users to enjoy enjoy its beauty, its silence and its natural resources. Dirt bikes are utterly utterly imcompatible with the purposes purposes of a forest. Yours truly, A. Wright Arnot Wotten seeks re-election (Continued from page 9) could be headed for serious problems problems with our tax base. I believe that we should work on a sound plan which will encourage industrial dèvelopment" and therefore better balance the tax burden. I also thing that developers who want to exploit our area should be prepared to shoulder more of the' financial burden for new sewers, street development, recreational services and park areas, etc. In other words existing taxpayers shouldn't have to pay extra for new development. Our beautiful little hamlets should enjoy good water, sewer and other services. Their needs should not be overlooked now or in the future. As I travel around Ward, 1 talking regularly to a large number of constituents, constituents, they tell me that they are worried about rapid development and what it might mean to the quality of life in our town. They also tell me that they are concerned about the environment and the ecology. This leads me to the difficult difficult subject of refuse disposal. Garbage is a serious and growing "Fora DEDICATED WORKER ON YOUR BEHALF VOTE PAULINE STORKS for Hydro Commission Town of Newcastle Wards 1, 2, 3 ONNOVËMBER 14th Further Information 987-4253 problem not just in Metro but in Newcastle as well. We believe we can solve our own refuse problems in this area and have already started a successful recycling blue box program program in some areas. We will not, however, act as a dumping ground for Metro. I am firmly opposed to this idea and you have my word that I will fight hard , to ensure that we do not become a major dump area for Metro Toronto. Toronto. Thèse are just a few of the ideas that I call the "common sense" approach approach to managing our city. I believe that we must be able to live with any deals we make, and that we will have to work even harder to ensure that our growth is properly maaged. Growth can lead to prosperity prosperity and prosperity can lead to a continued high quality of life for those of us who choose to live and work in our township. As I look back over the last three years of serving the residents of Ward 1, a few highlights come to mind. I worked very hard with concerned concerned residents groups to prevent the Eldorado Nuclear Dump from coming to our area. I also strongly supported the new fire station in Enniskillen which will serve the north. This fire hall has been badly needed because of northern part of the town had to be served out of Bo wman ville or Orono. Local residents are so supportive of the new station that we already have 40 applications for volunteer firemen. Lastly, the plan to provide regtilar garbage pickup for rural residents as well as town folk becomes a reality reality in January. We have accomplished a great deal but there is even more to be done. I ask for your support at the polls and assure yoû that I will continue continue to do my very best to serve you by providing representation with integrity and hard work on town council for Ward 1. If you would like to discuss anything please feel free to call me at 263-2512.
