Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 13, 1989-11 Santa visits Wendy B's Expanding Centre for Individual Studies The Centre for Individual Studies in Cobourg is expanding its Outreach Programs. "It is our belief that in times of high employment, employment, we must make more of an effort effort to go to the students," says Eva Nichols, Co-operative and Alternative Alternative Education Officer for the Board. The Centre is currently offering offering three Outreach Programs - one at the Cobourg Jail, another at Legion Village for about 17 senior citizens, and a third at General Wire and Cable. This off campus industrial industrial program, involves about 20 students from both General Wire and Cable and from Curtis Industries. Industries. According to Nichols, the Centre is exploring the possibility of further further offsite locations, including a program at Trinity United Church in Cpbourg for parents who "are experiencing problems with day care. The students would be ble to bring their children with them to the church where day care would be provided," she said. As well, the Centre is working on a plan to offer . programs to parents at the local Y.. Future plans include rural programs and store-front operations. Plan wild turkey hunt in Lindsay area The Lindsay District's wild turkey introductions, have succeeded succeeded so well that some turkey hunters will have a chance next May, to match wits with this most wily of game birds. The Ministry of Natural Resources will be running controlled controlled hunts at that time. Hunters must enter their names in a draw for an opportunity to participate in one of two 6 day hunts (May 7-12 and May 14-19, 1990), in Wildlife Management Management Units (WMU's) 72 and 73. The first Ontario wild turkey hunts took place in two WMU's in the Napanee District in 1986. Since then the hunts have expanded to .six WMU's last year and ten WMU's for spring of 1990. Information from these initial hunts and the local wild turkey population status and range data, was used to determine determine the number of hunter permits fdr the new hunt areas. Wild turkey hunting is very popular in the United States with the hunters having a long tradition of participating in the spring hunts. However, for Ontario hunters this is a new hunting challenge. To assist hunters in learning the ropes of this new sport the MNR has made it a requirement that any wild turkey hunter must attend a one day workshop put on by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and pass an exam at the end of the workshop. The workshop will inform inform hunters about the rules of the hunt. Unlike other game animals wild turkeys can only be hunted from a half.hour before sunrise till noon. The hunt is restricted to bearded turkeys a characteristic of the male birds known as the gobblers. The nesting hens are protected maintaining maintaining the reproductive output of the population. The birds are hunted with shotguns using number 4, 5 or 6 shot, and archery hunters may also try their skills. At the workshop, wild turkey experts experts will instruct hunters on hunting hunting techniques such as; demonstration demonstration of the various type's of calls to bring in the gobblers, locating wild turkey habitat and'the use of different different types of camouflage to bring these sharp-eyed birds within gun range. > Hunters safety and ethics are fully fully discussed at the workshop. Hunters attending will be instructed that when hunting wild turkeys they should stay put and call the gobblers gobblers into gun range. Hunters sneaking up on gobblers is a most ineffective hunting method, the turkey is just too wary a bird. Stay put and call the bird to you, it's safe, it's effective and it's what turkey hunting is all about. The nearest workshop for local hunters will be held at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough on Sunday, March 11, 199G. Hunters must obtain permission to hunt from landowners, failure to get permission could result in being charged under the Trespass To Pro- ■ pert y Act. Hunters planning to hunt next spring in the WMU's 72 and 73 can obtain an information package at the Lindsay MNR District office by dropping in or by phoning.
