A Friendship ribbon for new playground Instead of the traditional red ribbon ribbon the public school students of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Newcastle fashioned a Friendship ring ribbon to be cut for the official opening of the new playgrounds at the school. Each ring contained the name of a student at the school. Hannah expresses grave cone ern over catapulting educational costs Larry Hannah on Monday at the Town of Newcastle council; meeting said he was expressing his great concerns over funding for the Board of Education as a taxpayer. He said, "Let me point out that the Town js not < responsible for education and that on attending a meeting of the board with other municipal representatives and local area M.P.P.s there was an indication of real problems in funding for education. He outlined projected mill rate increases for the board over the next few years increasing some 21 percent in 1990 and rising rising to a 34 percent increase by 1994. He said the future was very clouded, "it doesn't look i good", he said. He also said their present position indicates they have not been moving fast enough, Hannah was the only member of the Town of Newcastle to attend attend the meeting which was called called by the board of education. The playground is at the northend of the Newcastle Memorial Park, adjacent to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. The playground was developed through the efforts of-'the students and teachers at. the school, the Town of Newcastle, the Parents' Association Association as well as the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen and Kinetics. The official ribbon cutting took place Thursday afternoon after school, in which the ribbon was a friendship ring ribbon which had been made by .the students and with each ring containing the name of a student. All groups from the students to the Kinsmen and Kinettes and Parents' organization were involved in assisting with financing of the playground! The Town of Newcastle was also involved. • (Continued page 2) Qrono Town Hal plans Friends of the Hall group The Orono Town Hall Board features resulted from discussions through the formation of a subcommittee subcommittee are proposing to embark on a program of providing monthly entertainment at the Orono Hall, According to Ann Dreslinski, chairperson of the Board, the hall exists exists for the community and to be used by the community. She said monthly entertainment programs could help bring those in the community together and add further activities in the community. To this end another meeting of the sub-committee is to be held this week. The idea of monthly entertainment following the recent successful Craft Show and Sale held at the Hall when, many people expressed the wish that the hall could be used more often. It had been stated by some that it had been years since they had been in the gallery of the hall. ft is the intention of the Hall Board to promote an organization such as "Friends of thé Orono Town Hall" in which membership would require a modest membership fee. In 1977 and 1978 skiing started on December 4th and operated for some two weeks but then petered-out temporarily due to rain and a warm spell. Over the past week-end the standard standard hills two runs were in operation operation on the east side of the facility. This week-end the bowl will also open with half of the run now covered with artificial snow.
