Hope Township to form Liaison group Hope Township is to form a community community liaison group in association with the Siting Task Force for Low Level Radioactive Waste Management. Management. Landfill and incineration here to stay Michael DeGroote, chairman of Laidlaw Inc.^told shareholders at a recent annual meeting, that landfill and incineration were here to stay despite the controversy surrounding them. He also said J^aidlaw will rely on waste management as a major source of revenue and that over the next ten years it will be difficult to keep less than 50 percent of solid waste going to landfill sites. Laidlaw operates the Newtonville area landfill and a similar operation south of Peterborough. Want parity with Metro teachers Separate school teachers for the Durham Separate School Board are seeking parity with Metro Separate school teachers. The board has offered all teachers a 4.5 percent increase which falls some short of the demands of the teachers. Growth up 100 percent in west Northumberland During the past year growth' in Port Hope, Hope and Hamilton Townships, as well as Cobourg have increased by 100 percent. Cobourg reported the greatest growth, with a permit value of $57,909,024. Port Hope followed with $20 million, Hamilton Township with another $20 million and Hope Township with $14 million. Housing market goes soft in Durham The housing market in Durham is levelling off with Pickering being the most affected. There has been a 28 percent drop in all of Durham from January to September this year. Brock is down 48 percent, Newcastle 28 percent, Oshawa 21 percent, Pickering 73, Scugog 49 and Whitby 14 percent. Kanter to consider Ganaraska source area In a letter to Sam Cureatz the Ministry of Municipal Affairs stated that Ron Kanter, M.P.P., who has been appointed to considered considered source areas to streams running running into Lake Ontario as well as studying the lakefront and green areas will also have concern for the source area in the eastern end of the Ganaraska Forest. Kanter, has in fact, already visited the area. Cureatz has sought information as to Ranter's concern for this particular particular area. , Harbour study put on hold A study for the Port Hope harbour harbour has been put on hold until the 1990 budget meetings are held. The Flarbour Commission is seeking $40,000 from the Town and then will look for further funding to carry out the study. Courtice community centre on 32 acre parkland A first meeting has been held in Courtice with consultants and public to discuss community facilities for the community which could include a community centre, playing fields, library, day care etc. À second meeting is to be held in January. Mayor Hubbard expects to announce announce in March the final decision as to the development on lands beside the Courtice High School. St, John ambulaiice needs help The St. John Ambulance of Oshawa-Newcastle is in need of volunteer helpers to «jerve on its various administrative committees. The committees meet the third Tuesday of each month. At least twelve new members are needed. Further information 434-7800. 911 emergency call now in effect in Cobourg The 911 emergency phone call went into service in Cobourg last week. It services fire, ambulance and police. The 911 operator can also call back the caller if further information information is needed and the caller has hung up. $2 million parking tax tab for those in Durham The new provincial tax on commercial commercial space and parking lots will cost commercial property owners in Durham some $2 million dollars. Munciiaplities will also have to hand over $700,000 next year on municipal-owned parking lots. Attended NDP leadership convention in Winnipeg From this area two delegates included included Wilf Day, Port Hope and Marg Wilbur, Uxbridge. Day first supported McCurdy and then going over to Audrey McLaughlin. Wilbur cast her first ballot for McLaughlin and thus to the final -ballot for victory. "I think voters will respond to Audrey", states Day, "she has a different style". Wilbur said she had read much about McLaughlin and was impressed impressed with her background. She said she hopes there is something new with Audrey. Wilbur also said she has noted that women are becoming more interested in politics and this should benefit McLaughlin. Seek private operator for Havelock line The president of the Toronto- Havelock VIA passenger association association states they are now looking to the private sector as a solution to continue with the service. The line is to be closed January 15th by the federal government. There has been no indication that GO will take over, according to the association. Montreal firm purchases CKAR and CKQT Oshawa's two radio stations, CKAR-AM and CKQT-FM have been purchased by Power Broadcasting Broadcasting Inc. of Montreal. The purchase must be approved by the CRTC. The new company proposes new improvements through the? use of more local talents and to increase the amount of community broadcasting and news. Food processing plant to close in Whitby The Gobi Food plant in Whitby is to close in May with the loss of near 100 jobs. Local farmers have been growing some 11,000 to 12,000 acres of sweet corn, sweet peas, pumpkins for the plant on an annual basis. Most farmers said due to diversification diversification over the years they can survive this loss.
