Tentative agreement on landfill reached by Durham & Metro The Region of Durham and Metro Toronto have come to terms on the joint use of a new proposed landfill site in farmland at Whitevale in north-west Pickering Township. Last week both municipalities gave approval to the proposal that will provide a temporary landfill site for at least four years to 1966. The Region of Durham expects to benefit financially by some $2$0 million and possibly more during the term of the contract. Durham also benefits with some millions of dollars up front with the signing of the agreement. Further Metro Toronto has agreed to sell Durham two poten- ■ tial dump sites, its own in Pickering Township, which alleviates any fears in the future they could be used used by Metro. Metro is also directing some of its waste to their Maple site allowing room for Durham to use Brock West site Until 1992. It is expected that agreement will not be signed until sometime in January between the two municipalities. The province is expected to fast- track environmental hearings through the Environmental Protection Protection Act. The Christmas spirit is growing here as various groups gear up for the festive season. Student Council News On Friday, December 15th there is a dance being held at 8:00 p.m. Sports News This past week the Clarke High School • basketball teams played at Port Hope High School in Junior Boys and Midget Boys competition. The Midget Boys Team defeated Port Hope 56 to 36 while playing a strong defensive game. Mark Tranter led the way with 18 points, Todd Jones and Kevin Louws added 14 and 12 points respectively. Strong defensive defensive efforts by Mike Gunter and Kristen Dart helped to propel the team to victory. This was the First time the Midget boys have defeated Port Hope for a number of years, so they are looking forward to a good season. The Junior Boys Basketball Team defeated Port Hope, as well, to give ' Clarke a terrrific start to the basketball basketball season. Cystic Fibrosis, which affects the lungs and digestive system and w'eakens the body's immune system, is known as the most common common incurable genetic disease of children. It affects approximately one in every 1800 children born in Canada. Until the exact cause of ÇF is known, a cure or control is not possible.
