Telling the group that they must continue' to work together, Fawcett Diana Stewart, Chairperson of The Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education, early in December predicted that' local ratepayers could face dramatic hikes in mill rates if the Province continues to fund public education at the current level. Speaking at a joint meeting of Board trustees, municipal officials, and area MPP\ Stewart; told the group that calculations by a provincial provincial public education lobby group -the Ontario Public Education Network Network - show that Northumberland and Newcastle mill rates could jump to about 21 percent by 1991. The meeting was called to present the joint concerns of municipalities and trustees over the level of provincial provincial funding of education to area MPP's. Along with Board trustees, j 11 representatives from : municipalities within the Boards jurisdiction attended the meeting. Reeve Roger Wilson of Hope Township told the MPP's that "the general concensus of Hope Township is that the Board and • municipalities have the same problems...It problems...It is important that education education be supported and funded in an adequate way." Later, Joan Chalovich, representing representing the Town of Cobourg, argued that local taxpayers "can only handle handle so milch: At some point you (the Province) are going to make it possible for us to continue the level of services, people would like to have." But both Durham East MPP Sam Cureàtz (Conservative) and Northumberland Northumberland MPP Joan Fawcett (Liberal) said there was no easy answer to the, funding issue. Curealz urged the trustees and municipal representatives to be "vigilant," and constantly remind their area representatives of any shortfalls in provincial funding. "This is the era of the lobby group,", he said, advising them to make sure their voices are heard. Joan Fawcett told the group that "if education were the only Provincial Provincial priority, the task of the government government would be easier...All 1 can say said she wished she had a "magic answer." At the conclusion of the meeting, Stewart said she hopes the dialogue initiated last night will continue. ¥ 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 The Corporation of the TOWN OF NEWCASTLE GIVE THE GIFT OF FITNESS AT THE NEWCASTLE FITNESS CENTRE POOL MEMBERSHIPS ANNUAL MONTHLY ADULT $ 75.00 $ 14.00 SENIORS- $45.00 $ 8.00 STUDENTS $ 50.00 $ 9.00 FAMILY $150.00 $ 25.00 FACILITY MEMBERSHIPS (Squash & Swimming) FULL ADULT DAYTIME SENIORS & STUDENTS FAMILY ANNUAL $210.00 $105.00 $105.00 $420.00 QUARTERLY (3 MONTHS) ' $ 78.00 $ 42.00 $ ,42.00 $130.00 TICKETS OF 10 AND DAILY PASSES ALSO AVAILABLE FOR SQUASH AND SWIMMINd, ALL RATES INCLUDE CO-ED SAUNA AND WHIRLPOOL USE FOR ADULTS 18 YEARS AND OVER.
