Oro.no '-Weekly limes, Wednesday, December 20, IV8V-I7 Bill Bramah's Ontario I met Father Mark Curtis at a recording studio. Although he's a parish priest at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Guelph, he has another career - he's a composer and recording artist known as "The Singing Priest". He's a big, round-faced, friendly, personable man who smiles a lot. On the surface, easy-going and full of fun. He was at the studio to make another record. I sat in the control room with Barbara Myers of Evergreen Records. Through a wide window we could see Father Mark at a microphone in the adjacent sound-proof room. He began to sing one of the many songs that he has written, a back-up band in the shadows. Fm not a great fan of today's pop music. I grew up in the era of George Gershwin and Cole Porter and regard most of the current stuff with feelings ranging from amused indulgence to downright contempt. But Father Mark's mellow tenor voice and the soft-rock rhythms of the band lulled me into enchantment enchantment and thoughtfulness as I listened listened to lyrics about life and love, joys and sorrows. 1 was thinking both the words and the music he writes must spring up from his background of experience experience in his work of helping people, people, and as a result, his two careers have become intertwined. Later, as we talked, he told me that was exactly what had happened. happened. He was expressing in his music what he had learned in helping others with their lives. I asked him how he found time to handle both careers. "Sometimes it's tricky," he laughed. "There are days when I say three masses, have two baptisms, hear five confessions and make a couple of visitations before getting to a concert that night." At the time I met him, he had completed four records and had just returned from a six-week concert concert tour. Wherever he goes, he packs the house and has fans of all ages and all walks of life. After expenses, anything he makes from records or concerts goes to charity. Bookings and other details are handled by his producer and publicist. Father Mark is obviously taking it all in stride. He's a relaxed, happy happy man who has' two careers that mesh - one at the-alter, and one is his alter-ego as "The Singing Priest".
