4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 20, 1989 SPORTS Orono Tyke Team 2 News Report Town of Newcastle Weekly Fire Galls On Saturday, December 16 the Orono J & M Custom Framing Tykes and Bowmanville I.D.A. Drug Tykes played to a 2-2 tie. Both teams had several excellent scoring chances but both goalies played extremely extremely well, Ryan Pinte for Bowmanville and Brandon Caruana On December 12th, Orono Novice travelled to Baltimore to play Baltimore #2. In the first period there was a lot of end to end action by both teams, but finally at 9:31 of the first period Baltimore scored. Orono: had their chances too with some good saves being made at both ends. At 5:06 Andrew Reid scored on a nice play from Murphy Irvine and Mike Morrison. The rest of the first period saw some» good hockey as both teams checked fiercely. Score at the end of the first 1-1. Second period Baltimore got on the board at 4:38 breaking the tie. The remainder of the second was a pleasure to watch, real good hockey with both teams holding their own. In the third period at 4:52 Orono scored on a break away by Andrew Reid. A minute later Baltimore scored to take the lead. Things were looking bad for Orono, down by one with less than three minutes left in the game. Orono put on the pressure and the goal light shone at 1:44. Scoring for Orono was Alan Robb, assisted by Steve Foster and Jamie Richter. That goal raised the spirits of the Orono players, coaches and fans. The players were not done yet, with 37 seconds left Steve Foster flipped the puck into the net over the Baltimore goalie, assisting him was Jamie Richter and Alan Robb. Final score was 4-3 Orono, strong performances turned in by Ryan Schoep in net, and all the players on the Orono team. Good work! On December 15, Orono played host to a Novice team from Port Hope in an exhibition game. Things started off slow with the two teams The Orono Roughley Insurance Tyke team took on their counterparts counterparts the J & M Custom Framing team on December 6th. Although it was a good game the outcome was not great as we went down in defeat by a 3-0 score. Everyone played well , however, especially goaltendèr Justin Standeven, who made some excellent saves in keeping the score close. Players missing and who certainly certainly would have made a differnce were Jake Bonnetta, Kyle Moore and Bobby Witheridge. Our next game was Saturday, December 9th in Orono against Bowmanville's A & R Flooring team. It would appear that the boys were out to make up their previous loss. They poured it on to hand Bowmanville a 7-0 defeat. In the first period Orono came on very strong to score four goals, all from Bobby Witheridge. Assisting for Orono. Scoring the first goal for Orono was Jamie Parry assisted by Davie Lammers. On the second and last goal for Orono Tyler Robinson made a nice pass from behind the net to Andrew Beacock for the score. All the boys play a strong game. feeling each other out. At 4:22 of the first Port Hope scored with the puck going in off Ryan Schoep's pad. Good end to end action and solid hockey for the rest of the period. At 3:37 Jeremy Pare took a pass froip Steve Foster to tie the game. For the first eight minutes of the second period it was like they were starting the game fresh, both teams watching the other closely. At 8:20 Steve Foster from Mike Morrison made the game 2-1 for Orono. The end of the second saw Andrew Reid score unassisted, with 50 seconds left. The third period saw Orono boasted by two goals in the second, score two more, the first was Andrew Andrew Reid assisted by Jonas Bonnetta Bonnetta at 4:20. Second goal was by Jamie Richter unassisted at 20 seconds. Final score was 5-1 Orono. Strong performances by Ryan Schoep in goal, also Amy-Jane McAllister, Murphy Irvine, Kevin Copping, Alan Robb, Kyle Beacock, Clint Hawkshaw, Bobby Witheridge and all our goal scorers and assisters. Next game is December 22nd, Orono hosts Grafton at 8:15 p.m. On behalf of the coaches, managers, trainers and helpers we wish the players and their families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happÿ holiday. Players don't forget the Newcastle tournament ' December 27th. The first half of the season is almost over, and after a rough start we have settled into play some good hockey. Again in the second period Orono played strongly as they scored two more unanswered goals. Scoring were Greg Shetler from Jake Bonnetta and Tyler Robinson and Paul Landers from Kyle Moore and Bobby Witheridge. The play was much closer in the third period as both teams had some good chances. The only goal of the period went to Orono's Tyler Robinson from a very offensive goaltender Michael Gibson scoring two points and a shut out in this well played game. Also not making the score sheet but still playing a fine game were Greg Bester and Brad Copping. ,' Finally on Saturday, December 16th Orono lasted yet another Bowmanville team. This time it was the Rotary teàm- Our boys were really up for this game as they came away with a 7-4 victory. The first period was a close match. At about the halfway point in the period Orono's Greg Shetler scored assisted by Michael Gibson and Greg Bester. As the period came to a close Bowmanville managed one between the pipes to even the score. The second period proved to be a much more offensive battle. There were six goals scored this period. The first three went to Orono's Bobby Witheridge assisted by Matthew Matthew Reid and Paul Landers, the second second from Brad Copping and the last was unassisted. Bowmanville came back with two of their own in a row but Orono's Paul Landers closed out the period with a fine goal assisted by Bobby Witheridge. The period ended with Orono on top by a 5-3 score. Bowmanville poured it on early in the final period and eventually got a puck past red hot goalie Jake Bonnetta. It was now a very close 5-4 hockey game. From here on though Jake closed the door on Bowmanville and Orono went on to score two more unanswered goals from Paul Landers assisted by Matthew Matthew Reid and Kyle Moore and one more goal by Bobby assisted by Justin Standeven. The final score was 7-4 Orono. It was another very fine performance by our boys and a special mention to Jake Bonnetta who played a superb game in goal and quickly recovered from an injury injury to finish out the game. Keep up the good work boys and you will be hard to beat. Next game is Friday, December 22, when we host Newcastle and then the father son game on Saturday. See you there!
