Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 19,2000 - & career fair ■ Clarke High by Barbara Nugent Clarke High School's cafeteria cafeteria was packed with teachers, students, employers and parents on January 12 between 9:00 a.m. and 11:3.0 a.m. as the Clarke co-op students had their Career Fair, in order to demonstrate demonstrate to others what they have learned about the career they have experienced in their co-op' placements. Displays were set up on tables, and students stayed by their booths so that the visitors could speak to the co-op students about the particular particular career they have chosen to represent. Everything from video's to a dog was brought in to the cafeteria cafeteria by students, to help further represent their co-op placements. placements. Jordon Schmahl, who is co-oping at the Clarington Police Department, had police officer Dana Collins and station operator Robin Milburn, attend the Career Fair with a police cruiser as part of his "display". ' Newcastle ill® Clarke High School's Co-op students had the opportunity last Wednésday morning to share their work experiences with fellow classmates at the Co-op Career Fair, in the school's cafeteria. Jennifer Thiele spent 1/2 a day this semester at the Bowmanville Flospital in the Physio Therapy Department. Although she didn't learn message therapy at her co-op placement, Thiele said, "they tell you what to do in books, but there is no better training than hands on training." After High School Thiele says she hopes to pursue a career in physio therapy, occupational therapy or become a doctor. Message recipient is Shane Ruppert. The Career Fair was a great success, and a good opportunity for students to show what they have learned in the time they have spent working: in the community community as co-op students. Li° n Dick welcomed welcomed 37 Newcastle Lions as well as guests Roger ' Nichols, a guest of Lion Francis Jose and Lions Janet and Harry Marissen of the Belleville Club. Guest speaker, Scott Weatherall of The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre for Children & Youth was introduced introduced by Lion Alec Martin. The centre was founded in 1989 to take care of children and youth diabetics up to the age of 40 and teach diabetics to check and handle their medication and illness. This is a very committed group that administers to over 500 patients, and are very appreciative appreciative of the help given by organizations like the Lions Club. Mr. Weatherall was accompanied by Mrs. Irene Martin, who has a diabetic 11 year old son, and became a volunteer at the Clinic because of the excellent treatment her sons received when he was first diagnosed. Lion Murray Paterson thanked Mr. Weatherall and presented him with a $500.00 Lion'S'Chequc for the clinic. Thank You letters were read from Mrs. Kaye Quinney, Mrs:- Mabel Goode and Jenny Walhout. It was decided to take a lull- page ad. Dance Chairman, Lion Terry Graham reported that the New Years Dance was a great success thanks to an excellent committee and the help of several Lion's Wives as well as the large turnout of members for decorating- and cleaning up after the dance. Alex Campney did a great job working the net, Jordan McDonnell, Jon DeVries, Brian Knapp, Brandon Miller and Cary Konopka were sharp at. the blue line. Daniel VanderWeer scored the opening goal with Tyler Armstrong and Jordan McDonnell garnering the assists. Garrett Klompmaker scored their second goal with Kevin Jackson and Cary Konopka assisting.
