KENDAL NEWS ■ . by Joan Anderson y The high winds and powdery snow today certainly made it seem far colder than the thermometer thermometer read. It was a good afternoon to sit by the fire and bask in its warmth. Winter is definitely making itself felt now, after such a long mild session. Be sure that your tender face and fingers are well coveted to protect from frostbite. frostbite. Today, the second Sunday in Epiphany, service was conducted conducted by' Rev. Don Stiles, who is supplying. for Rev. Dr. John Sullivan during his holiday period. Dora MacDonald did a great job greeting the congregation congregation as Thelma and Jack Westlake were ill. "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty" was the Gathering Hymn. It was followed by "New every Morning" and then our Prayers of Confession and Assurance of Pardon. We then read Psalm 111 responsively before dealing with Concerns and Celebrations in our congregation. congregation. ' For the children, Rev. Stiles demonstrated an analogy of Christian life using a veiy special special Thomas train with his name on the side. Megan Hartwell helped Rev. Stiles put the train together. Like the train, we too need power (energy) on which run, people around us from which to derive support, track,s (the Bible) to take us the right places and direction, and an Engineer (God) to steer us and support us in both good times and bad. The choir sang a beautiful rendition of "A Light Is Gleaming" before Rev. Stiles proceeded with the Message entitled "The Be-Âttitudes - #1 - The Affluent Poor". This was based on the Scripture Reading from Matthew 5:1 - 12, and dealt with only the first two Beatitudes. "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. "Rev. Stiles explained that people people who are poverty-stricken call upon God for help much more often than those who are wealthy and are concerned only with how to get more. In reality,' reality,' those who have closer relationships relationships with God are far richer richer in spirit than those who are rich in material things. This does not mean that those who are affluent cannot have a relationship relationship with God, but it may be more difficult for them to divert their attention from the material to the spiritual. Those who mourn often feel bereft of any comfort unless they can call upon God for relief and use their Bible to find assurance of his love and pardon. Offering was presented, and service was closed with the sung Lord's Prayer, "Saviour, Again To Your Dear Name", and then after Commissioning, as a response to the Benediction "Go Now In Peace". Coffee and cake were served after service and many enjoyed the fellowship shared at this time. Concerns and Celebrations Please include the following in your prayers this week, as we will.
