( Orono Weeldy Ttmes. Wednesday. February 16, 2000 - 3 Engagement, Forrester - Heward Mr. and Mrs. David Forrester are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Karrie Ann to Steve Edward William, son of Mr. 8c Mrs, Tom Heward. The wedding will be held May 13, 2000, Orono United Church. From Around Home by Roy Forrester After receiving a phone call from Malcolm McKenzie, McKenzie, who lives somewhat north of Orono and even north of Pontypool I have come to the conclusion that perhaps we live too far south to enjoy winter birds at our feeders. The McKenzies who live on Highway 7 just west of Highway 35 have certainly been favoured with winter bird life and report a Robin nibbling on apples still clinging to the trees. Last year it was a Blue Heron wading in the freezing waters of the stream running running through their property. property. I forgot to ask if it survived. survived. A couple of years ago there were a number of. reports 'of a small flock of Robins in this area and on occasions were seen drinking drinking from the canal on Station Street west. Certainly Malcolm's report of the Robin is our first of this year. But it doesn't end with the Robin back at the McKenzie's for the feeders are attracting Red Poles, both Finches, Grosbeaks, Nuthatch and some 50 Goldfinches flocking to the Niger feeder. Lots of bird entertainment at the McKenzie's. Picked up a little scoop from David Mudd at the Orono Cafe last week - the sighting of a Red Bellied Woodpecker. It has been at a feeder, west side of the road to the lake just before turning east at the lake, Newcastle. The bird is somewhat out of it's range especially for the winter season. to breat he a little easier My own sightings have been Hairy Woodpeckers, male and female in the Nursery lands along with a Hawk travelling too fast for an identification. Evidence of the Ruffed Grouse, wing marks in the snow, have also been seen in the Nursery lands. A small flock of Snow Buntings were also sighted along the Town Line west of Orono. Just to change the subject subject and since life surely should not be all about birds and skiing I'll fake you on a recent trip to the theatre. "Follow me" Since son-in-law Jim was unavailable I had an extra ticket. With little ■ coaxing editor Marg of the Times accepted the invitation invitation and said, Til drive." I accepted that but did wonder if she was somewhat somewhat afraid on my driving in the city. "We Will go by car and train." I also accepted that - it would be different and different it was. We sped off to the Scarborough Town Centre. Disembarked at the east parking lot and literally hiked through the full length of the Centre to catch, the Scarborough Rapid Transit train to Kennedy Avenue. Never knew the Town Centre was sq large. I could compare it with hiking through the Ganaraska Forest and the next time I'll take a compass. I never knew there was Scarborough Scarborough Rapid Transit either but it did whip us along to Kennedy Avenue where we The Lung Association Durham Area needs enthusiastic, enthusiastic, flexible volunteers. We are in need of people to serve on special event planning planning committees, process memorial donations, make deliveries & collections with- transferred to the TTC Subway hoping to end up at Union Station. There was lots of looking looking at direction signs, but Marg kept saying 'follow me'. I was beginning to wonder when she suggested suggested we should get off at Yonge Street. Lots of time to discuss this issue and we finally settled for two stops past Union Station on University but there was some uncertainty and again we were dragging a finger over a wall map. "Can I help?" were the words from a slightly- framed friendly senior? "We are looking for the Royal Alex." "Follow me," came the reply and doing so we soon saw the Roy Thompson Hall and everything everything fell in place even the Royal Alex. No wonder our friendly senior was so knowledgeable knowledgeable of the show, her granddaughter was one of the many dancers in the show. Marg did remark later that there was a friendly comradship throughout the audience in the ski- high upper level. It so happens happens that most are part of a seven-show promotion, resulting in our seats being always the same and thus our neighbours the same. In fact the lady sitting beside me asked where Jim, the man from Ficton, was? "The Needfire", a Celtic celebration, surprised both Marg and I, Celtic music and dancing to no end, and indeed toe-tapping. It was a big cast with at last 50 dancers and an explosive . Needfire band of fiddles, bagpipes, whistles, rhythm boards. Action packed to say the least. Among the many highlights highlights of the show was the appearance of Laura Smith singing 'My Bonny'. Laura has many credits to her name in singing and songwriting songwriting which she rightly deserves. We did make it home but that credit is all due to Marg who guided us through the channels and tunnels making the right connections at the right time.
