( Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 15» 2000 - S Lindsay's Central Ontario Wolves feature six Orono area players OMH A ToUrUCHUClit The Orono area seems to be a hotbed for hockey players of late including these six familiar faces who play for Central Ontario Wolves and are also vying for an Ontario championship title this weekend in Lindsay. Pictured above kneeling are: Kyle Searle and Matt Carauna; Standing in back: Nathan Caruana, Tyson Gimblett, Jesse Gimblett and Curt Robinson. Dufferin Aggregate major tykes participated in the Colbome tournament last Saturday--their second of the season. Right from the get-go. the boys were determined to leave Colbome with some kind of hardware in hand. In game one, Colbome proved to be no match for the high-flying Dufferin squad given the 7-0 outcome. Game two vs. Newcastle was tougher with the' Orono lads falling behind 4-1 after two periods. However" the third all Orono's when they came from behind to tie. Game three for the B championship against Port Hope was their toughest of the the tournament. It was an exciting and evenly matched game. Orono jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Port Hope finally got it going narrowing it down to 4-3 with a minute remaining. Dufferin kept ahead of their opponents with strong defensive play and great goaltending goaltending claiming a 5-3 B' championship victory. Tournament scorers were Eddie Meester with an amaz ing 8 goals; Tyler Webster 2; Brandon Leblanc, Brandon Cox, Kyle Sullivan, Christopher Lunn, Cory Weiss and Nick Weeden all with one apiece. Assists went to Curtis Zwolinski 3, Kyle Sullivan 2, Jordan Sullivan 1, Nick Weeden 1 and Kevin Schoenmaker 1. Goalies, Matt Vignale and Tyler Webster played superbly. Congratulations Orono for winning the sled race by pulling the coach the length of the ice on a toboggan with the fastest time of all teams! of Champions ••• The Central Ontario Wolves minor bantam AAA hockey team will be hosting the OMHA Tournament of Champions in Lindsay on March 17, 18, and 19. This year's Wolves' team 4 features six players from the Orono area, four of whom played last season with the Ontario championship Mark*- ham Label peewee team. Those players include Jesse and Tyson Gimblett, Curt Robinson and Kyle Searle. Matt and Nathan Caruana are also on the team. The Wolves finished first overall in the league and qualified qualified for the tournament by defeating Quinte and Ajax- Pickering in the playoffs. The tournament features five teams which include the CTA champion champion Grey/Bruce Highlanders, the STA champion Welland Tigers, and three teams from the ETA--Central Ontario Wolves and either York Simcoe Express, Peterborough Petes or the Ajax-Pickering Raiders. Round robin play begins at 11 a.m. Friday. Each team will play two games each both on Friday and Saturday. The first and second place teams will play for the gold medal at 12:30 p.m. Sunday while the bronze medal game gets underway at 10 a.m. The Central Ontario Wolves minor bantams are coached by Dan West and Sean Firth of Lindsay. Apple Blossom Shop goes 3 for 3 in exhibition play Orono's Apple Blossom atoms had a great week, winning winning all three, of their exhibition exhibition games. 1 Monday night,. Orono had a rematch against Newcastle and skated away with the win. Wednesday night saw the two Orono atom teams faced off against each other. The play was fast and competitive. Both teams were closely matched. Fibergrate started the scoring off with one .in the second period. Apple Blossom's Dustin Armstrong tied it up in the second, unassisted. unassisted. Brock McGill scored the winning goal for the Blossoms, assisted by Armstrong. A strong game was played by both teams. • Saturday found the Blossoms in ' Millbrook fo,r another fast-paced game, coming coming away with a 7-1 win. Greg Howe began the scoring by, swooping up the ice^ for his first of the game, just minutes into'the first period. Millbrook soon tied it up, but Brock McGill got the next shot from the sticks of Dustin Armstrong and Daniel Hodgson in the second period. The Blossoms put the lid on the game in the third period. period. Tyler Skelton scooped a goal from Howe for one. Shorthanded, . Armstrong picked up his own rebound, shot it to McGill who netted it for another goal. McGill got his. hatrtrick from Armstrong. Emma Lunn picked up the last goal on a pass from Heather Maitland and Hodgson. Thanks to all who came out and played.
