1 fl Week!}-- T!mes. Wednesday, November 15, 2000 ^ The Farmer and the Statesman by: Myno Van Dyke Fred Bowen was a farmer who lived on the north side of the Third Concession of Clarke, just west of the Wilmot Creek. The Bowens had 150 acres and raised Shorthorn cattle. Fred's greatgrandfather, greatgrandfather, Bradford Bowen, purchased the land in 1835 making him one of the early settlers of Clarke Township. Fred went into local politics politics in 1914, becoming a councillor for the Township of Clarke. He kept that position until 1918 when he became Reeve. Bowen made a big political jump in 1922, when he ran federally in the riding of Durham and was elected to the House of Commons. In 1925, he ran for re-election, however this time, he faced.a formidable opponent from Port Hope, Vincent Massey. Vincent Massey had roots in Newcastle as it was his great-grandfather who began the Massey Manufacturing Company, the predecessor of the Massey-Harris Company and later Massey- Ferguson. Although there were likely still some hard feelings about Massey pulling out of Newcastle in 1879 and moving moving the operation to Toronto, the generosity of the Massey family continued. In 1923, Vincent's father, Chester Massey, provided the funds to build "The finest Community Hall in Canada" at the corner of , King and Mill Streets in Newcastle. Included in this incredible building was a main floor library, a dance and banquet hall room, meeting rooms for local clubs and organizations as well as a bowling alley and a facility to show movies. The celebrations celebrations took six days and of course, Vincent was there with his father. Vincent was well educated, attending the University of Toronto, then went off to Oxford University in England. Fie became the Dean in Residence of Modern History at Victoria University. He also serVed his country during the First World War as the Director of the Repatriation Committee and the Assistant Secretary of the Dominion War Cabinet Committee. After the war, he became involved in the Massey- Harris Company, first as Director, then as Secretary and in 1921 he became the President. In 1925, he was asked by Prime Minister McKenzie King to run as a Liberal in West Durham. This made sense, since the Masseys were well thought of in Newcastle and Vincent and his family lived nearby at Port Hope. Also, this riding had been "Conservative" since 1904 and King felt that perhaps perhaps a strong candidate like Vincent Massey would turn the tide. Massey campaigned hard and soon the area had a considerable considerable numbêr of posters with Vincent's picture on St. Stephen's news WARM CLOTHING DRIVE As a grade 12 student from St. Stephen's Secondary School, I .would like to thank you, the community, for your generous donations and encouragement when asked for assistance in collecting articles for Street Patrol. Our first trip was on November 4, with 2 teachers, both my parents, and 19 volunteered volunteered students from St. Stephen's Secondary School. In only 7 hours, we experienced experienced a different side of life. Each student and adult was touched by words of appreciative appreciative people. Since this was so successful, successful, a second drive has been suggested. Students have approached me wanting to participate again or heard about the experience and was wanting to be involved in the next drive. In response, I am organizing sind accepting donations for smother possible drive for December 2, .but will be accepting any donations until December 31. The unclaimed proceeds will be donated to Good Shepherd and shelters for abused women and their children. Articles can be dropped off at St. Joseph's Parish, St. Francis Parish, St. Teresa's Parish and St. Stephen's Secondary School, or phone 987-5295 for pick-up arrangements. Cheresse James them. Bowen, however, ran a much more "conservative" campaign. Some locals felt that Massey was spending far too much money and that perhaps perhaps this would be indicative of how he would be if he was their elected representative. When the ballots were counted, counted, Bowen continued the long Conservative tradition of the riding and won with a majority majority of 946 votes. Prime Minister McKenzie King was not deterred by Vincent Massey's loss. He "appointed" Massey as a Minister Without Portfolio. ' In 1926, Vincent Massey became Canada's first Minister to Washington and remained there until 1930. In 1935, Massey was appointed as High Commissioner to London. He made such a favourable impression there that in 1946, King George VI invested him with the Companion of Honour. In 1952 Vincent Massey was the first Canadian appointed to the post of Governor General of Canada. Since then, the Governor General has always been a Canadian. Massey was a tireless promoter of Canada, traveling to every comer of the country and praising its diversity. As well, Massey promoted the arts through the Massey Foundation and by helping create the National Library Council . and the National Arts Centre; His excellence in this position was further demonstrated by the fact that he was reappointed as Governor General twice by Prime Minister St. Laurent and Prime Minister Diefenbaker. In 1959, Massey moved back to his estate at Port Hope, "Batterwood" and continued to chair the Massey Foundation.. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II made him the first Canadian to receive the Royal Victorian Chain. He died while visiting England in 1967. This great statesman and philanthropist was given a state funeral and buried in Port Hope. After parliament was dissolved dissolved in 1926 there was another federal election and Fred Bowen was re-elected for a third term to the House of Commons. After politics, Fred continued farming on the third concession of Clarke. They had one daughter, Mary who never married. Fred died in the late 1940's and in 1951 his wife Alma sold the farm to Irvin and Olive Allin. Their son, Bob Allin and his wife Esther still live on the same property. The original Bowen farmhouse is still there, just west of Bob and Esther's newer home. Bowen did a great job representing this area, but for Massey, los- ' ing the election in 1925 was the best thing that could have happened to him, and to Canada... * CLASSIFIED ■ ARKFTPI ACE "Advertise Across Ontario or Across the Country* WSmMM,mm TORONTO TOY & DOLL COLLECTORS SHOW, Sun- . day, November 19,10am-4pm, International Centre, Hall 5, 6900 Airport Road, Mississauga.
