His one-man band approach with sopie undetected undetected backroom help promoted sourcing-out just like the big companies. We were told "It's the way to go now and it's the way of the future." It didn't take long to arrive at the future and this past week brought it all to light even though it has been , creeping upon us since the big drop from popularity of Nortel and the loss of millions to investors, in the U.S., Enron, the darling of the U.S. energy field, stumbled, then crashed into bankruptcy not. without devastation of it's investors and especially employee-investors. Last Friday the plight of the Free Enterprise giants of the auto industry was laid wide open by the Ford Motor Co. affecting thousands of workers both in Canada and the United States. Other auto firms are as well affected but not in the same degree as is Ford. It is ah industry that has years of experience and expertise and yet it falters falters through some of the basic mistakes in business. It rather destroys the thrust promoted by Harris that "Free Enterprise Can Do It Better." We have lost a lot of làtê as to concern for others and the lack of working together for the general good. Do we want a business attitude in our health care or our educational educational system. Does it all have to be dollar and cents? Can the different levels of government not work together for the general good. And last of all, "Have the tax reductions provided a better way of life in this province and country?" MY CLIENT EEEB THE ISIS WiW.t>OUW.C0!A by Roy Forrester stock market "Greed is good." I. confess. I enjoyed the movie and now show major symptoms 'of SMS - stock market stupidity. stupidity. I refuse to face reality. I will not accept the obvious, that the rich and powerful - do control the wealth and therefore the stock markets of the world. It's like going to a poker game and you are the only one at the table with face up cards. The only time you can win is to get very lucky and obviously, you are not going to win any big pots. Further - on the downside, if we play long enough the broker/dealer broker/dealer will eventually have all the chips anyway? I was reviewing my several several "make believe" stock portfolios portfolios that I had been following following over the last few months. The high number of "delistings" "delistings" should be a sign to us little investors. Do we heed the warnings? I don't think so! We think we are smart enough or lucky enough to avoid these losers .' .We are all aware of financially success- ful people, some Of whom have beep business bankrupted more than once. It's sad to me that we apparently apparently have such a loose system system as to allow people to walk away from their debt, a first, a second, who knows . how many times? I probably sound bitter, but I just want to play and invest on a level playing field. Kelly Adams The Orono Weekly Times. is interested in your opinion .Call: 983-5301 It has to be about birds this week at least for the beginning of this column. It is not that I have that much to report but it does get the fingers moving on the keys. Don Lyeett and I took an afternoon trip last week to visit the McLaughlin Bay Marsh area, Oshawa, as well as a short hike into Cranberry Marsh in south Whitby. Both areas are under-, going a form of rehabilitation rehabilitation so as to be more attractive to wildlife. Dredging is, upderway in Oshawa where the creek that has run through the sizeable marsh area will circle the marsh and then run into Lake Ontario: The water level in the marsh will be maintained at the desirable level through g pumping system between tlS lake and marsh. One of the reasons for separating the Oshawa marsh from the creek is to affect the demise of Carp in the marsh. Cranberry Marsh will see the return of water throughout the whole area, this year. Last year the program program allowed the marsh* to , drain dry and surge, out with vegetation. This year it appears that the water return and its level will be controlled. Both areas have in the past prbyided great waterfowl waterfowl viewing and hopefully this will return this spring. For that to happen, we first have to get snow' so .spring , knowè winter has been here and it's time to shôw up. Coming home via Taunton Road we spotted a Kcstral on the hydro line. To me it seems as if this bird has not been that plentiful and I made only a few sightings last summer. fn the area of Hawks, Don has a regular Marsh Hawk visitor to the field across from their home on Main Street. On two occasions occasions he has seen the bird pluck a mouse out of the grass. He also reports at least 50 Redpoles at their Niger feeder. These birds cart mix in with other Finch. At home we do have a flock of Gold Finch that can take up all eight perches with birds still looking for a spare perch. They appear throughout the* day. In fact the feeders have been regularly regularly used, so far this year and two DoWny Woodpeckers Woodpeckers are addicted to the suet. 1 have settled with Marvin Lunn since he has brought in his wife, Fran, as his back-up and has (continued page 6)
