UNDEFEATED!!! The boys ended 2001 in a qualifying tournament for Silver Stick in'Wasaga Beach, The competition proved To be, too much for the boys as they ended up losing all three games they played. However, those hard times were soon forgotten as the team, returned home to their familiar winning winning ways. They opened 2002 in Little Britain against the Mariposa Lightning Orono got the ball rolling m w s early as Steve Burt scored the lone goal in the first period assisted by Chris Moffat and Steve Hicks. They extended that lead early in the second when Doug Garlcik scored from Mark Spiers and Kyle Cox. Orono went up 3-0 about four minutes later as Kyle Allin scored from Greg Dunham and Brian Pisani. Mariposa broke Ian Crashley's bid for a shut-out later in the period, but Orono shut them down in the third frame and secured a 3-1 victory. victory. Two nights later the boys were at home against a very good Wood v ille Hurricane team. Orono scored first. Mark Spiers continued his strong play, scoring from Doug Garlick and Kyle Cox. This game was an excellent back and forth battle but Orono pretty much put it away in the second period by scoring twice in a five minute span. The first of the two goals was scored by new forward, forward, Chris Moffat, with assists going to Steve Hicks and Steve Burt. The second goal of the period was potted by Greg Dunham from Adrian Vasseur. Kevin Martin played outstanding in goal during the Major aims to advance Play-offs have begun, for the Major Plumbing Novice Rep team. The preliminaries consist of round robin play between the Leafs, Newcastle and Ops. On Friday, the Orono squad showed hometown fans that they are determined to be the ones who will advance. Newcastle travelled into Leaf territory and were surprised by a goal scoring attack. In the first period, Jesse Despurdy potted the first goal of the game off a great pass from Christopher Limn. Gregory St. James fired in goal #2, assisted by Spenser Cole. The Newcastle team was unable to answer back, In the second period, both teams' attempts to get onto the scoreboard failed. Ryan Brandt and Patrick Rernpel, the goaltending duo for Orono, were stellar between thé pipes. Eddy Meester, Ty Simpson, Carson Quinn, Adam Duke, Sean Bargeant and Ty Middleton provided solid defense. Third period action included included Tyler Webster scoring a short-handed beauty off super passes from Sean Bargeant and Gregory St. James. Jesse Desourdy gave a great pass to Spencer Cole, who then fired the puck fop shelf. Newcastle remained scoreless and the Leafs took Game One by a score of 4-0. The Leafs travel to Ops on Thursday. -KS Line changes refresh Wooden Carouse! . On Sunday, January 20, Orono tied Bowmanville's #11 team, MMP Motors p-3. The Orono Leafs dominated the game but just couldn't get the puck in the net. * v Bowmanville scored the first goal at 8:14 in the first period. Jordan McDonell and Andrew McClatchey applied pressure. Orono "answered with a shorthanded goal by Jevon Staples, assisted by Harley McColl. Bryce Cochrane was goal tender for the start of the game and- made a gréât save, keeping the score tied 1-1 by the end of the first period. Goalie coach, Kevin Flood has done some super work with both goalies this year. 1 Coach Todd Mercer and Trainer Rob Harding added some spice to the game by changing some of the lines. Mitchell Harding played the defense position extremely well and was like a bridk wall, not letting tlje opposition get past him with the puck. Noel Snow did a fine'job as centre, and Neale* Aziz came on strong as a Winger. Zack Flood played relentlessly.' In the second period, Newcastle Funeral Home team tastes defeat twice Fenelon Falls made their way to Orono for a Friday night game. Orono played a great first period, although the Fenelon Fall team scored first From there the Orono squad played the game short-handed due to penalty minutes and injuries. Mike Hicks is out with a shoulder injury. Fenelon Falls won, 4-0. Shane Winters had net duties for the evening. On Sunday January L the Orono team made their way to Ops for a 5:30. game. The team Worked hard and kept their heads up- Ops. scored once in the first period and got three points in the second period. Orono came back rested after the flpod. Devon Robinson managed to slip one in assisted by Josh Flynn. The team helej Ops off but couldn't couldn't catch up. Final score: 4-1 for Fenelon Falls. Alex Hart played a strong game in net. • - BH Bowmanville scored their second goal. Orono's Codv Dulbecco, Jordan, and Harley McColl helped set up a great play so that Andrew could pass to Jevon, who scored his second goal of the game. The second period ended 2-2. Matthew Mercer dug in the comers for the puck and kept the puck inside the blue line. Wingers Chad Moore and Kevin Jackson tried several times to pop it in the net, but just couldn't cash in. They did a great job keeping it in the opposition's end, but just couldn't score. In the third period, Harley did a fine job as winger, scoring scoring a goal assisted by Jevon. Then Bowmanville scored on a power play to even thé score again. Tanner Johnston made our hearts go pitter-patter by not having his stick on the ice as the puck came sliding by just as the game buzzer sounded! Luckily the puck hit the post and didn't go in! On Wednesday, January 16.-' 2002, the Atoms played an ' exhibition game in Manvefs and earned a win 3-1. In the first period, Jordan sebred the first goal right from the face off. Mitchell Harding and Jevon Staples also netted a goal each that night. , -,/M third period allowing just one goal despite non-stop pressure by the visitors. Orono secured first place overall with a big 3-1 victory in this game. The next night, Orono was , at home once again, this time hosting the Fenelon Falls Flyers. This game was all- Orono as the visitors proved to be no match for the mighty Leafs. Orono cruised to a 10- 3 victory in this game. Goal scorers were: Kyle Allin (3), Chris.Moffat (2), Steve Hicks (2), Adrian Vassuer (2) and J.C Beecroft: Assists went to: Chris Moffat (3), Adrian Vasseur, Steve Burt, Brian Pisani, Kyle Allin and Greg Dunham.
