10 T Orono Weekly Times. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 J Drugs can by Kaye McOustra As parents we have a built In fear that our children are going to run Into drugs as they walk the halls at schools, and socialize in our community. Like it or not, they are out there and that is why the Clarke High School Council invited our School Liaison Officer P.C. Mike Roy from the Durham Police to speak to our parents. Some of what he told us we knew about, a lot of what he told us was very relevant and rather scary. It soon became very important to us that as parents it is our responsibility responsibility to know what's happening in our kid's school and social environment, and to raise our kids in a positive way so that when they do have to make adolescent choices, they are armed with information information and self assurance. The Ontarip-Student Drug Use Survey shows that from 1993 - 1999, the percentage of kids between the ages of 14 and 17 who had used pot over the last month rose from 12.71% to 29.21% and 13.61% of kids surveyed were using hallucinogens. That was two years ago. How much higher have those percentages percentages risen now? In the US 21% of 8th graders, 40.9% of 10th graders and 49.7% of 12th graders regularly regularly used marijuana in 1999 according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. P.C. Roy described three of the most common drugs in use by teenagers at the moment. The first, and most popular is marijuana: Now we all know if has been around for years, but did you know that in 1960 the THC content (equivalent of the alcohol content in booze), was 3%? Today the THC content content can be as high as 40%. Chemicals are used for rapid growth and plants that used to take a year to grow, can now be grown in three months. These chemicals are absorbed into the brain, and like it or not,, yes you can still; become a pot-head if you smoke enough! Use of hash oil is one way of achieving a euphoric, stress free high - the problem is that one never knows what the hash itself has been cut With - dog excrement is one product used. Enough about pot. Ecstacy (MDMA) is another another one of life's little enhancers. Easy enough to make - we are told one can get the ingredients off the Internet and they are not even regulated' in Canada'. Relatively affordable on the street too. Commonly used to heighten senses and energy levels and often used at parties, parties, these pretty pills which can be dissolved in drinks, often come in different colours with designs of butterflies butterflies or flowers pressed into them. It is sometimes hard to identify Users but some signs are pupil dilation and hyperactivity. Users frequently frequently become nUmb to the cold and can be found without without jackets in extreme cold weather. Recently an overdose overdose fatality was admitted to a hospital in Ontario with a body core temperature of 50C. and two hours after his death the temperature was still 42C. Dehydration takes over and thirst is not always quenched with good old water. In order for the body to heighten the senses to the degree that it does, it must increase the heart rate to between 120 - 150, which raises the blood pressure. Depending on the body size, fitness and other substances ingested, one or two pills can cause cardiac arrest due to overdose. Whilst there is no physical addiction to Ecstasy, it takes some time to be flushed out of the system system because it is stored in the body fat. Therefore over time more chemical is need- ,ed to achieve the same high. Now that P.C. Roy had captured our attention, he dropped the big one on Us. Cocaine. Yes, it is making a come back in high schools! Biker gangs .are flooding the market with cheap cocaine, hoping that teens will see it as the drug of choice. Once hooked (addiction can happen happen with a first time user), up goes the price, up goes crime to afford the habit, and down the chute go the kids. Cocaine powder is rarely pure, and is 'cut' with substances substances to make it go a little further again and again. Draino, powdered .sugar, rat poison and battery acid are a few of the finer cutting substances substances used. Sadly, one only discovers the radical ones once the internal organs have been éither poisoned or eaten away. Since the intensity of the drug is an unknown, overdose is a huge possibility. possibility. With our sjenses height- enèd through-information, P.C. Roy wrapped up his presentation presentation with the following statement which we would like to leave with you, "Strangely enough kids will 'trust' a complete stranger with what they are ingesting, before they will trust an adult in a position of authority which include their patents, educators and protectors. The unfortunate thing is, some have been dead wrong."
