mmm Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday. March 6, 2002 ) 150 Years at The Fair by Myno Van Dyke This will be an exciting year for the fair at Orono. It will be celebrating 150 years. Agricultural Societies were formed to increase the buying power of the farmers. Farmers wanted to have the best stock, seed and implements and by attending the local "Fair" they could learn about what was available. The "Clarke Fair" in 1895 was so successful that it was reported in the Canadian Statesman that "tremendous crowds flocked there Saturday and so greatly encouraged are the Directors that a three day World's Fair is talked of for 1896". There were 2,136 entries that year. The Directors Were a bit overly optimistic as there was no World's Fair in Orono the following following year. For about the first twenty years, the Clarke Agricultural Society held the annual "Show" in the Village of Newcastle. Then, the "Show" alternated between Orono and Newcastle. On even years it was in Newcastle and odd years it was held in Orono. In 1895, it appears that Orono became the permanent home of the Fair. For many years, the Fair was held on a Wednesday and Thursday. Can you imagine that being successful today? Fairgoers were always treated to some insight on the latest technology. In 1858, Mr. Odell of Bowmanville "showed a very ' excellent washing machine, which if brought into general use, will do much to lighten this branch of female labour". There is no mention of any man being involved with it. In 1895, T.N. In 1903, Levi Morris demonstrated the Gramaphone for the first time. In 1912, the Seymour Power Company demonstrated electricity. electricity. People crowded around to see bread being toasted, food being cooked and clothes ironed by this invisible force. The Fair was a great opportunity opportunity for local residents to "bring and brag about" their livestock, poultry, produce, grain and seeds, fruit, dairy produce, baking and crafts. In some cases this fueled neighbourly neighbourly disputes on who had the best. There were many interesting interesting forms of entertainment. In 1894, there was a baseball match and in 1916, a "Fat Man's Race". In 1944 there was a Mouth Organ Contest and the winner was Ross Metcalf. The first Baby Show was in 1910. In 1922, the winner winner was Olive Brown and in 1933, Joyce Sutton was the winner, in 1899, there was a "Speed Contest" for local horses. This year, the Fair celebrates celebrates the 150th • Harvest Homecoming from September 5-8. Jose, Tamblyn, Reid, Rickard, Billings, Brown, Cowan, Rolph, Tamblyn, Moffat....
