Orono Weekly 'limes, Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 3 A large number of area residents attended Dorinda Vollmer's piano recital last Saturday evening dedicated to the memory of Doc McKenzie. The recital marked the first anniversary of the passing of Doctor Alan Fraser McKenzie who tended to the medical medical needs of this community for 45 years. Pictured are the Doctor 's three sons, left to right - Ian, Malcolm and Don. Seated is the Doctor's great granddaugher Martine, and the Rev. Marion Dorinda Anne Vollmer. From Around Home by Roy Forrester^/ The north part of the Village had some rather unusual visitors on Saturday of this past week. Just after leaving the house Saturday morning I was hailed down by Gerald and Dorothy Robinson and Alvin Yeo. They reported a small flock of Wild Turkeys crossing Mill Street in the area of Orono Garage and going further west past the residence of Ruth Grady and likely through our woods back of the house. As well they reported a Pileated Woodpecker that has been chipping out hunks of a tree just east of Mill Street and the Yeo dwelling. The Turkeys are rather a vagabond group and they might be back north of Leskard or in the Kendal area by now. As far as the Pileated Woodpecker is concerned it is likely still around and I'm hoping I can find it with a mate nesting in the area. I have spent almost three hours looking for a nesting of this bird to record for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas. This has included included a hike down the Linton Trail as well as through the area around the Orono Park. Signs of the bird's presence have been observed. The bird drills-out a new nest eveiy year and nesting generally takes place the first of May. The oblong hole is generally open to the east or south. This faces the opening away from the weather coming from the west and north. We prefer to face our Bluebird nests to the east or south for the same reason as above. So I am most interested in looking at the Pileated work back of Yeo's. It is interesting that I should walk down into our woods back of the house on Monday to find that the Pileated Woodpecker has been at work on a dead Poplar tree. This has had to have happened within the last four days. I would think that the bird would be getting serious as to where home is going to be for the nesting date is not that far along the calendar. Howard Myles reported the sighting of a Pileated on Monday at his dwelling on Church Street south. It stayed only for a short time. I mentioned the Atlasing for Breeding Birds of Ontario earlier, which is a five year program. It is also province- wide. It is interesting that lour birders in Orono are involved in the program including Jim Richards, Don Lycett, David Mudd and Roy Forrester. I would think that this number being involved from such a small community community would be somewhat unusual. Each volunteer is responsible responsible for recording all proven bird breeding experiences experiences that are seen and known to be within their ten kilometre square. Roughly my square takes in an area from Ochonski Road, Concession 5 east to Starkville, north to north of Kendal and back west along the ridge to a point at the foot of Enterprise Hill. Don Lycett's 10 kilometre square is west of Orono and involving. involving. the area almost to the eastern section of Central Lake Ontario Conservation Association. I was involved in a similar similar 5 year undertaking twenty twenty years ago with Bill Bunting and Sid Rutherford. Our ten kilometre square was in Hope Township and with some outside help 122 species were recorded as breeding in the area. If you are aware of any unusual nesting birds in the area give us a call at 983- 5147 or if west of Orono call Don Lycett 983-5908. I would like to hear more about that big white bird. Surely it's not a Snowy Owl. But considering the array of weather conditions we have been having anything is possible. possible. In closing out this column column this week I would like to say how much I enjoyed the "Lightly Classical" recital by Marion Dorinda Anne Vollmer dedicated to the memory of Dorinda's friend, Dr. Alan Fraser McKenzie. I'm still humming 'Memory' from Cats. And as to her story of buying popcorn at the Oakville theatre, I would be safe to say I bought it there before she did.
