^ Orono WeeklyTimes, Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 7 ) Newcastle & District Historical Society Leaving your legacy Members of the Newcastle and District Historical Society were all motivated to write down their stories and document document the 'evidence of their lives', Monday night. Guest speaker Fawne Stratford-Devai a published author and lecturer on genealogical and historical topics told the Newcastle Society members to take their shoe boxes of old pictures and just throw them away. "You will be saving the next generation generation a lot of guilt by throwing throwing out that shoe box now," Stratford-Devai told her audience audience assembled in the Lions Rooni of the Newcastle Community Centre. "We all want to go in search of the dead, but we lose sight of the archival information we have in our homes," she stated. "The raw proof of our shared family and community history is disappearing." In her presentation titled Canadian Family History Research in the 21st Century, Stratford-Devai said that the great skill for the 21st century family historian will be the ability to access the billions of bytes of information on the internet while verifying the information found against solid evidence. It's the bits of paper and the microfiche that has withstood the ravages of time. Stratford-Devai spoke of the importance of documenting documenting the stories and lamented the fact that Ontario does not have a decent archival system.. system.. "Historical Societies all across the country are struggling struggling to set up archives," she stated. Much of the archives from land registry offices have ended up in the dump over the years, she said, and it continues to happen. Stratford-Devai has worked extensively and is dedicated to the access and preservation of our heritage records. Along with her husband, Stratford-Devai has travelled the province to rally hundreds of volunteers , to identify and find homes for important land registry office records. The legacy of the modem family historian is still taking shape Stratford-Devai said in closing, and asked "What role will you play in the legacy we leave the next generations?" Without the support of our local historical and genealogical genealogical groups and active participation participation to preserve and make available the important evidence evidence in archives, there will be no lasting legacy from the research of modem family historians.
