Good old fashioned weather By Phyllis Lowery The Weather is the most overworked topic that I know of. You meet someone, you greet them and 9 out of 10 times the next thing you do is remark on the weather. You may ask them how they are but before they can tell you, you say something about the weather. You meet someone whom you should know but can't remember their name, you immediately remark on the weather. This is always a safe subject and it gives you time to try and remember their name. We had a teacher once, I can't remember her name but she used the weather to teach us when to use the letter 'E' or the letters 'EA'. She would quote: "Whether the weather is cold or hot, we shall have weather, whether we want it or not." One boy had to write this on the blackboard 50 times. Weather can cause floods and droughts. Good weather or bad, we have no control over it, yet it controls us. Crops rot in the fields or won't grow because of weather. weather. Our fuel bills are high or low on account of the weather. weather. Some feel that all the pollution pollution we are making with cars, trucks and the rockets and jet planes are causing a great change to our atmosphere. atmosphere. The air is thick with pollution. We are doing away with our natural areas, by draining them and building over them. Over the last 20 or 30 years thé changes have been drastic. Winters are dry with hardly any snow or we get too much snow. Spring is either too dry or too wet. Summer is either hot and dry or windy and dry and fall is the same. Either the farmers can't get on the fields or loose thé crop to the cold weather. What are we doing to this world? The weather reporters are hardly ever right in their forecasts forecasts any more but a thunderstorm thunderstorm was forecast so I thought that I had better disconnect disconnect the computer. This got me to thinking about storms. When, was the last time we had a thunderstorm? I started to go back year by year and I can't' remember when we last had a really good or bad storm. One that rattled the windows, shook the house and lit up the rooms with light. The last one I remember was when I was driving home from Peterborough, from Grand Lodge and that had to be at least 13-14 years ago. I am a person who loves thunderstorms. I'm sure you all know someone who hides in a closet or on a stairway away from windows or doors during a storm. When I was very young, we lived in Mount Hope, which is considered to be the highest point midway between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario: We always got extreme weather there. When there was a thunderstorm my step-father and I would go out on the porch and watch. He would make up stories about them, so I grew up not to be afraid. I remember the storms we had there one time. Lightening struck a tree at the back of our house and then the next storm hit the pine tree beside the house. The lightening lightening travelled along a limb and then jumped to the gas pump and sheared off the light globe and bulb; remember remember this was what we now call an antique pump. I ran across the road and then back over the road to the store to tell them to shut off the hydro to the pump. In August there were always storms in Kendal. We used to watch them building up and coming over what is now called the ski hill and betting on how long before it would hit us. Gne time we had just arrived at Kendal and a storm came up. Lightening struck thé pine tree at the east end of my grandfathers house on Monck St., it followed a limb, came through the transom above the door, through another door into my grandfathers grandfathers bedroom and crossed over his bed. Thank goodness it was daytime and he was at work. The lightening followed followed a spike through to the basement and out a cellar window. Afterwards all you could smell was sulphur. The noise deafened us for at least an hour. At least then we had a warning that a storm was coming. Now you hear about people out golfing and there is no sign of a storm and they have been struck by lightening. lightening. What have we clone to our world? We can't do anything to control it, but we sure are going to have to find a way to help improve it. When was the last time you remember a spring or summer thunderstorm? A real Thunder-boomer? P.S. How about some of you others out there putting pen to paper and writing about some of your memories and letting the youth of to-day know what it was like back in the good old days. That way when they reach our age, they will something something to compare with.
