Could one museum board WM lllllil mêm liliw m i Ik '1. ■l * '.V.V.VAV.V. . <ÿYvy.v.:.»y.x.:.x.:.»- V.Y-'- f s > / < liilSSli . < ' i The Clarke Museum and Archives occupies the old Kirby schoolhouse which was built in 1878. Concern voiced at public meeting over amalgamation of museums. While the Clarke Museum Board has approved plans to amalgamate with the Bowmanville Museum Board, some former members see the move as 'the beginning of the end' for the Clarke Museum. Some of .the sentiments expressed at Thursday's public public meeting held at the Clarke Museum did not favour the direction recommended by the Municipality, fearing Clarke Museum will lose its identity once amalgamation is completed. Recommendations stemming stemming from a recently completed completed review of Clarington's cultural institutions claim that the Municipality as a whole would be better served by one Museum Board. "Clarington as a whole pays taxes to these two museums," stated curator Charles Taws at the public meeting. All the villages in Clarington like Hampton, Tyrone and Haydon will have a mandate in the new museum, museum, he explained. "We want the new Board to document the history of the entire Municipality," said Skip Crosby, "before it's paved over. You've done an excellent excellent job, now we want you to take your expertise throughout throughout the entire Municipality," he said. When asked if there would be money available for this, both councillors in attendance, attendance, Councillors Gord Robinson and Pat Pingle said "yes." Both museums identified a lack of space for archival display display in their review. "This museum is known for its archives, but doesn't have the setting for people to come in and use them," stated Crosby. To alleviate the space problem at the museums, the main floor of the present Bowmanville Library will be given over to the museums. Once that space comes on line in 2003, it will free up space for storage down the line said Crosby. The plan is to move Clarke's archives to the former former library. "This is going to be good for the people of Bowmanville," stated former long time board member Donna Robins. "But if you don't have a lot of reason to come here [Clarke Museum] you won't get people here," said Robins, then added that she had several inquiries from people who asked "What's going to happen with the things I've donated to the Clarke Museum?" Robins said she had no quarrel with the one board but could see no cost savings in the proposed structure. The recommendation is to hire one curator for both museums and an administrator. The current board will combine and form a transitional transitional board till the end of their term in the Fall of 2003. Then one board will be made up with two members from each ward appointed by council. council. It will be the function of this board to set policy and give direction to the curator and the administrator. Once relieved of all his administrative responsibilities, responsibilities, the curator will have time to dedicate to the collection, creating displays, and handling handling educational programs. "This museum was not involved with the local schools," said Taws, "and that needs to be part of what Clarke does." He would like to set up a school room and have classes come in and experience what it would have been like attending a one-room school at the turn of the century. Crosby suggested running a summer day camp for kids out of the museum. Councillor Robinson said that though there would be some rough waves ahead, the changes would be positive.
