6 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 24, 2002 =SPOR TS Soccer's swell KEEN INTEREST PUTS PRESSURE ON FIELDS Interest in youth soccer is healthier than ever this spring and if the sport continues to draw new participants, the need for places to play will become more critical. As it is now, Orono's playing playing fields at the fairgrounds and the school are in almost constant use. "We have outgrown our four fields," according to Gord Lowery, local convener for the Darlington Soccer Club. "There has to be a new playing field." Uninterrupted use can be hard on the grounds, and if there are games or practices running every night, maintaining maintaining the fields in top form can be difficult. Soccer's appeal is not likely to fade in Orono. .Orono's league now has 20 minor teams, - up a couple more than last year - with roughly 270 boys and girls aged 5 to 19 registered. For further evidence that soccer is here to stay in Orono, consider the mens' select team that has played continuously in the area since it was started by the farming community back in the late 1880's. That, according to Lowery, is a North American record. This historic mens' league is already feeling the effects brought on by limited space. Younger players get prime time, which leaves seniors more often scheduled on summer summer holidays, which is a challenging challenging time to get a full team to turn out. "The younger ones come first," acknowledges Lowery, who himself plays on a senior league in the Peterborough area. It often comes down to "just finding any green space to practice." Soccer's attraction looks like it will continue in Orono and the push for another field may grow louder. Explaining soccer's appeal, Lowery says: "Soccer is still relatively cheap and it doesn't take up a lot of time." -LM Meets figure skating star! Orono's Lisa Lunn (left) was delighted to see the world's top figure skating stars perform at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium earlier this month after winning front row seats in a drawing contest sponsored by Stutt's Pharmacy. Following a spectacular spectacular ice show, Lisa got a chance to meet Olympic champion Alexei Yagudin (at right) along with other skating greats. ri 11 n iiniiiiriiiiiTii 11 nmn 11 iiiiiiiiiimmi III AKUmOMO'S NEW SPRING ft III BESIKNING APRIL 2 III Mon.
