Qrono Weekly Urnes, Wednesday, June 19, Ü Places I'Ve Done Time by Clifford Francis Morbid? I don't think so A couple of weeks ago someone made mention that I was a morbid soul and that I took death lightly. Actually, quite contrarily, I find myself a devout man. Have I ever lost someone close to me that I cared about? As a matter of fact, I have. A few years ago I went out with a girl that did missionary work in South East Asia. I almost answered the "call" myself but before this happened, happened, she was captured by head hunters in Borneo and, I presume, eaten. She was never heard from again. That was a very trying time for me. However, to write about the deceased is no big deal for me. I believe I mentioned some time ago about winning the two-man pallbearing championship and I was also 'Pallbearer of the Year" once. And another thing, I belonged to the Pallbearers Guild of America and was often paid for being a pallbearer. There are lots of people who are disliked so much, that families pay to have them carried out. It seems they don't have six friends. Other times, it's just that the old fellows out-live their friends and funeral homes hire guys like me to carry them out. The first grave I ever helped dig was for a man that had died and wasn't found for two weeks. I dug the grave and the sand poured in as fast as I dug it out. Before I was done, one could see the coffin on both sides and the pile of dirt was big enough to cover three coffins. Needless to say that man was buried pretty quick. All deaths are not really sad. Read on... Last week I wrote about sailing and a girl named Sarah. I sent her a copy of the paper and Sunday night she phoned me. She laughed about the story and then told me about her great Aunt Ula who passed away about a month or so ago, Her aunt was eighty-eight years old and in great health. She had never been sick a day in her life. In fact, this spring she had split, carried and piled enough wood for next winter. She had it all in the basement ready for burning. The very morning on the day she died, she'd jacked up the r 1951 Morris Minor that she'd had since new and put on the summer tires, changed the oil and greased it. Then, she retired to the front porch, rolled a cigarette, had a pint of beer and went to sleep-- never to wake up again. Nothing sad about her life I would say. It was never my intention to make anyone angry over what I write. So, pardon the pun... can we bury the hatchet? hatchet? .
