1 1 ! f ! 1 'Wednesday, July 21, 2004 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Years ago I wanted to join one of the local organizations. Whether it be the Masons, Kinsmen, Knights of Columbus Columbus or the Orange Lodge, I didn't give a damn. Just to be a member would have been good enough. However, no organization wanted any part of me. I remember asking to become a member of the Kinsmen Club here in town, and the fellow I asked said, "I drank too much." I looked at him in bewilderment and said, "Why do you think I want to join you?" It didn't take long before that club folded in this town. This past Saturday, the Orange walk was held again in the Village and I noticed another decline in the number of bands. Every year it seems to get smaller, the marchers older and their steps slower. It is kind of a sad thing to see the numbers dwindling. Years ago I remember going all across Ontario to the walk on the 12th of July. One got there any way he could. I especially remember going to Peterborough by boat from Bewdley and not returning until the next day. We got back to the boat too late to go through the locks and ended up staying at the Queen's Hotel for the night, or one of the other four star hotels. I remember that the captain got sea sick returning home on Sunday and lost his store- bought teeth when he leaned overboard to throw up. I can still see them floating down to the bottom of Rice Lake. Speaking of Peterborough, that was a terrible rain they had last week--all the sewers backed up. But for the grace of God, I could have been there and drowned as I can't swim. A couple of 'years ago, a girl that I dated moved to Peterborough and asked me to go along. Luckily I declined. Last week she woke up in the basement where she was sleeping only to find herself floating in five feet of water. She swam up the stairs and out the door. Two days later she was still shaken by it all. Thankfully she is okay. I turned out to be a smart fellow after all. pill lilSilî ff -I ORONO - Library Bandstand 7 p.m Wednesday, July 21 - Wildwing Flute Choir & Hamstrings String Quartet Wednesday, July 28 - Thneed (Rock Night) Thursday, July 29 - Clarington Concert Band v Wednesday, August 4 - Jason Aiden McGill (Country) ; Wednesday, August 11- Adams Family & Friends .
