6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, August 25, 2004 Northumberland Motor Products Eagles Eagles soar to the All Jason "The Mailman' Carroll, the winning pitcher The threat of rain did not dampen the spirits of the Kendal Eagle fans as they traveled to Whitby for the second second game in the important series. The Eagles sent Jay Carroll to the mound hoping he could baffle the powerful Whitby bats. Although the wily veteran had suffered from a twisted ankle a week earlier, his experience and focus would be needed for a victory. Things did not start well as Whitby got on the board quickly putting up two runs in their half of the first. But the Eagles responded in the top of the second when right fielder Rob Staples crushed a two run homer scoring scoring Sunday's hero B.J. Hackett who had reached first on a single. The score remained two a piece until the top of the eighth when Staples stepped up and launched a 400 ft solo shot to give the Eagles the lead for good. The "Mailman" Carroll went the distance for the Eagles who seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. He allowed five hits in the game and three of them were in the first inning. Carroll tossed three strike outs and depended on his fielders to make the outs. Center fielder Dave Trew had to leave the game after colliding with Tyler Knight while making a spectacular catch in the depth of the out-, field. Tyler came off the bench when Kris Boyd was hit by a pitch and was unable to continue. continue. With two starters injured one would think that Whitby would have the advantage advantage but Manager Sharpe has used his players well this year and has a strong bench that comes in to play when needed and supports the starters in many ways. Jim Conboy, Devon Witheridge, Tyler Knight, Eric Zuvic, and Derrick Foster are some of the players that contribute a great deal during the game and provide provide support for the starters. With Dave Trew down, Steve Foster was summoned into the game and was able to record the final out with little fanfare. With this positive spirit and depth, the Eagle's have to be favoured to bring home the title on Labour Day. !
