6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 20, 2004 Novice Leafs have strong start The Leafs won their second second game of the season on October 9th. It was a tight checking game from the opening opening face off. The defencemen, Owen King, Ben DeBoer, Tate Simpson and Tory Manion did a great job of keeping the Sunderland team shots to a minimum. Cooper Phillips, in net, played great, stopping 13 of 14 shots. The Leaf's goals were scored by Dylan Armstrong, Dustin Boyd and Ben DeBoer. Assists went to Chris Third, Ben DeBoer and Tate Simpson. The Novice Leafs had another great outing on Wednesday night beating Woodville. It was a fast paced game from the opening face- off with the Orono team get-. ting 6 shots on the first shift. The Woodville goalie played great throughout the game holding the Orono team to 1 goal, on 22 shots in the first 2 periods. The Woodville team was ahead by a 2 - 1 lead going into the 3rd when the Leafs started with a power play and tied it up with a nice goal by Ben DeBoer. The Woodville team came right back though with a breakaway, but Cooper Phillips, who played another solid game, made a great save. The Leafs kept the pressure pressure on and were rewarded with 3 more goals to win the game by a 5- 2 margin. It was an all round team effort. The goal scorers were Ben DeBoer with 3, Alex Bortolazzo and Mitch VanSchyndel. Assists went to Dylan Armstrong, Ben DeBoer, Tyler Hutchison, Tate Simpson and Owen King. Sunday, the 17th, saw the first loss of the season, 6 -1 to the Fenlon Falls Flyers. The Flyers got off to a quick start and never looked back. Midway through the game with the Flyers up 3 to 0, the Leafs made things interesting interesting with a nice goal by Dustin Boyd. The Flyers tightened up the defence from that point on and the Leafs couldn't generate any more quality scoring chances. Ben DeBoer and Chris Third assisted on the goal. The Leafs next game is in Beaverton on October 24th at 4pm. L. Friday night, the Atoms played an exhibition game against the Port Hope Atom AE team and won 8-1. Netting two goals each, were Ryan Walton and Patrick McKay, with singles going to Mitch Marchbank, Dylan Dennis, Matt Verkuyl and Tyler Meijer. Assisting were Matt Verkuyl(2), Chris Haass(2), Mitch Marchbank, Dylan Dennis, Tyson Robinson and Tyler Meijer. On Sunday, the team travelled travelled to Omemee to meet the Sharks. Orono outplayed Omemee through the first two periods but could not beat the Shark's goaltender. Finally, in the third period, period, Michael Richards was able to put one past the goalie assisted by Warren Ball and Josh Gallina. Shortly after Stephan Fabricius made a nice pass to Patrick McKay who buried the puck in Omemee's net. Dylan Dennis then scored, aided by Jennifer Mercer and Mitch Marchbank to give Orono a 3-0 win. Ian Third played a good defensive game and Ben Hinchey played a great game to earn the shutout. V. Haass Orono Midgets bolt out of the gate The Orono Leafs 1 Midget jumped out to a fast start with back to back wins. October 12th, Orono 1 met Newcastle 1, winning 5 to 1. Adam Wood opened the scoring, scoring, assisted by Devin Robinson & Andrew Kirkbride. Robinson roared back with two quick ones to make the score 3-0, Wood assisting on both. Daniel Reilly scored the fourth on a nice rush, assisted by Daniel Hodgson. Kirkbride rounded out the scoring with assists to Robinson and Wood. Shane Winters played a strong game in net. On October 17th, Orono met Bowmanville 5. Orono dominated the game winning 6-2. Orono had a 5-0 lead after one period. Devin Robinson opened the scoring unassisted. Garrett MacDonald MacDonald scored the second, assisted by Andrew Fudge and Doug Deboo. Fudge and Kirkbride both notched a pair of goals with assists going to Deboo, Flynn and Robinson. Shane Winters was steady between the pipes. Mike Howe, Brien Konopka, Jesse Rice, Kyle Whitehead, Garrett Wood, Kevin Bourke and Heather Maitland played great hockey this week. D.
