Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Allin's midget reps thrilling win The second round of playoffs playoffs started for Allin's on Sunday January 30 against Newcastlé. Newcastle started the scoring off with three minutes minutes " remaining in the first period. Allin's bounced back though, with a minute left on the clock in the first period. Devon Sutton scored the teanVs first goal unassisted. Allin's seemed to loose sight of the game as Newcastle went on to score four more goals before the team could find the back of the net again. This time, the goal went to Josh Moffat, assisted by Matt Moffat up from Sutton. . Newcastle managed to slip one more goal in with a minute left in the game, concluding concluding with a 5-2 win. Troy Webster who was in net, should be commended as he deflected puck after puck. The second game of the series was played in Newcastle on Wednesday Feb 2nd. The game was close from start to finish. Orono slammed two points home in the first period much, to the delight of the Orono fans. Orono walked away with the win though, when Mark Spiers scored assisted by Moore. Alex Hart played a strong game in net. The third game of the series was played in Orono this past Sunday night, February 6. Newcastle started the scoring off in the first period period but Orono came back with three quick goals within three minutes. Points went to Doug Garlick unassisted, and to Evan Moore assisted by Greg Howe. The third goal was scored by Josh Moffat, assisted assisted by Moore. Newcastle tied the game up in the second period and then slipped another one by the Orono net minder in the third. Orono wasn't to be beat and with 2:39 left in the game Steve Hicks popped one in, assisted by Mark Spiers. The game went into overtime but no goals were earned by either team. The game concluded with a tie, each team earning a point for the game. Allin's next game is in Newcastle on Wednesday night at 9 pm Special Olympian bowling champ by John Witheridge When bowlers from Lindsay, Peterborough, Ajax Oshawa and Haliburton gathered gathered at North End Bowl for the Region 12 Special Olympics Bowling Tourr nament, the alleys are filled with enthusiastic, young bowlers. There were 122 competitors competitors all together in the tournament that took place on Saturday January 29. Kelly O'Neill from Orono received the Gold medal in the pins over average tournament. Most tournaments are pins over average as it is the most fair and allows bowlers of all levels to compete against one another on an even footing. Her average is 137 and she bowled games of 134,168 and 224 for a total of 115 pins over her average. She competed against ,62 other females .This was enough to give her first place in the female category. This was a remarkable feat becausé, although Kelly has bowled in the tournament several several times time she has never placed in the top three before. Led by the stand-up goaltending of Danny Benedict, and the incredible defensive play of Ryan Armstrong, Daniel Owens, Lucas Crosby, and Kale Stephens, Orono was able to keep Bowmanville #6 off the scoreboard for two periods. Orono came out fast in the first period and scored 3 unanswered goals by: Cameron Reilly, Glenn Acorn, and Tyler Trimble. Bowmanville scored two goals early in the third before Mitchell Trachsler added one more for Orono. After that Danny and the defense held strong and shut them down. Also playing a strong game were Jacob Diamond, Jimmy Chaplow and Austin Cole. Next game is Saturday February 12 in Orono at 4 p.m. D.B. Major Plumbing win series The Major Plumbing Leafs advanced through the first round of the playoffs this week. In an exciting series against the Fenelon Falls Falcons the Leafs took two of three games. The first game was on Wednesday night in Fenelon Falls where the Leafs played a close checking game and in the last two minutes of the game got three goals to win 5 -2. The second game was played here in Orono on Sunday afternoon. Again it was a very close game coming coming down to the last two minutes minutes when Fenelon Falls scored to take a 2 - 1 win and tie the series. It was back to Fenelon Falls on Monday night in yet another nail biter. It was a 1-1 tie through the first period and a back and forth game. The Leafs went up 2-1 in the. second second and held on. Fenelon Falls put the pressure on and in the last two minutes had a power play and pulled their goalie, for a 6 on 4. The Leafs held tight to the end, with excellent goaltending by Cooper Phillips and strong defence all around. The Leafs will meet the Newcastle Stars in the next round.
