Mayor John Mutton, along with Clarington Emergency & Fire Services and Durham Regional Police, kicked off a public awareness campaign about the value of working smoke alarms/detectors in the homes of the municipality. This initiative was launched as a response to a number of recent fire events in Ontario, the most devastating devastating being fire that killed seven children and their mother in the town of West Lincoln, on . November 8, 2004. The cause of the fire can not be determined, determined, according to the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office, due to the extensive damage caused by the fire, though it is believed the fire started in the living room on the main level of the home. It can not be determined if the home was equipped with smoke detectors. Two people injured in a recent house fire in Courtice, could have sustained less serious serious injuries, if the home had been properly equipped with smoke alarms; according to Clarington Fire Chief Gord Wier. There was a working smoke alarm in the Courtice home, but it was on the main floor, and the fire started in the basement. The Office of the Fire Marshal recommends that homeowners install one smoke alarm on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. For maximum protection, they suggest installing a smoke alarm in every room. According to Mr. Rick Pigeon, Chief Building Official with the Municipality, Municipality, smoke alarms must be installed by permanent connections connections to an electrical circuit circuit in new homes. They may have no disconnect switch between the overcurrent circuit circuit device and the smoke alarm. Pigeon explained that smoke alarms need to be replaced every ten years, and should be tested monthly. If a floor level with a bedroom bedroom does not have direct access to the outdoors, such as a basement bedroom, a window must be provided that ». >«* .K- «* can be opened from the inside and be large enough for an adult to pass throughs. Making sure your home is properly equipped with smoke alarms is simple and inexpensive, stated Durham Police Chief Kevin McAlpine, who lives a block and a half away from the Courtice fire where two individuals individuals were injured.
