CONWAY DOUG R. RUTHERFORD DEBRA D. CAMPKIN 905-623-5480 j DIVISION ST BOWIIANVILIE - AT WEEN.8L announced new provisions to regulate private water systems serving non-residential and . seasonal residential systems. The government intends to make public , health units responsible forensuring facilities facilities such as churches and. community halls have safe drinking water. The transfer of responsibilities to public health units will occur by the fall of 2006. Microbiological testing would be required. However, installation of treatment treatment equipment would not be required for all systems. Reporting requirements will be simplified. Adverse test results must be reported and corrective actions would be required. Details of the new regulations are posted on the Ministry of Environment's web site at www.ene.gov.on- .ca. The deadline for comments comments is May 29,2005. This announcement is good news for rural communities. It is the result of input from rural residents who are best able to offer practical solutions solutions that will protect drinking water without requiring expensive and unnecessary regulations and equipment. It is my understanding that owners owners will not have to install costly treatment equipment if their water is already safe. Health units will have the lead role in assessing the safety of drinking water systems, including monitoring and treatment. In addition health benefits will be increased for up to six months for people exiting social assistance. assistance. This will provide interim interim coverage until employer health benefits are available. Under exceptional cases, benefits benefits could be extended for up to one year. Last week's announcement also creates an employment benefit of up to $500 to help recipients who Jj |:jpjj " r .girip! obtain full-time employment pay for job-related expenses like uniforms and transportation. transportation.
