This past week, my husband and 1 ventured south to visit some of his old cronies in Connecticut. This was very big news to most of our friends because my husband husband rarely leaves his beloved home--never mind a nine-to-ten hour drive some where. Initially, I offered to drive the whole way in one day, but thought better of it and decided decided to make it over two days to enjoy the scenery etc. Although most people are up and at it early in the morning, morning, we were finally packed and ready to leave at about high noon. The drive on day one was quite beautiful--great weather weather and the first hints of color change on some ot the trees. As darkness approached, we exited the Mass Pike at Great Barrington in search of an inn we used to stay at in my younger days while on ski trips. -High above us: was the: harvest moon and all around was an eerie darkness. Thoughts of Salem witches and "Children of the Corn" filled my mind as I tried navigating navigating the very dark winding roads. We knew we were passing places but there were no lights to be found. About half-an-hour later, we saw some lights ahead and pulled into the first motel we found. As luck would have it, about an hour earlier a major transformer transformer had blown and we were in the middle of a mini black-out. The motel offered to reduce the rate by $20 bucks for the inconvenience ,but money was not the issue. Spending an evening with minimal lights and no cable woùld have been fine for most, but my husband was already in TV withdrawal from the six hour drive and desperately needed a news or sports fix. Thankfully, power was restored a bit after midnight midnight and he was able to watch a movie. Wc had survived survived day one--barely! Day two was a breeze and we arrived at our destination in Stonington right on Long Island Sound. I had booked a room from the web which had listed only two choices. Unfortunately, ours was just one step above the Bates Motel from the movie Psycho. Wc stayed there only one night and moved over to Mystic on day three to a lovely lovely place surrounded by water. My husband got together with six of his ex-co-workers for an extended lunch that I joined after 3 p.m. The group, appropriately named, The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight howled about all their misadventures in the advertising and television world of New York in the 60's, 70's and 80's. They--a very grey-haired crowd were all quite pleased not only to be alive but that they were not all in prison! Their parting parting was bittersweet and they would have the memory of one last meeting for the pure joy of it. We spent another few nights with friends and then made the long trip home in one day's drive. Our one and only stop, besides gasoline fill-ups, was to retrieve our pooch who was so excited to see us that he knocked my husband over with his enthusiasm--a enthusiasm--a perfect ending for my husband's first and probably probably only road trip. I'm thrilled I was able to drive all that way with Glen as my copilot--we're copilot--we're still speaking and I have no speeding tickets! tickets!
