The series opened at home for Allin's Orchard Leafs on Friday, January 31. Orono was quick, as Szymczak from Robinson and Dunham, scored after 59 seconds in the first, which shocked the Newcastle Stars. Orono continued to dominate, putting up two more, both scored by Dunham with assists going to Heerschop, Caruana and Szymczak. The second period was not much better for the Stars as they found themselves down 4- 1 at its close. Orono's marker came from Sutton, assisted by Dunham. The Leafs were let down a bit in the third as they saw the Stars come back within one goal before Richter put one in the empty Newcastle net. Crashley played a fine game in the rope rotunda as he faced several hard shots, but came away the winner. Game two of the six point series was played out in Newcastle on Sunday, Feb 2 with a capacity crowd on hand. Martin had to be sharp as Newcastle was gunning to tie the series. Once again Orono shocked the Stars by scoring first after 20 seconds. The goal came from Szymczak, assisted by Dunham and Millson. Orono was up by two, on a second goal by Szymczak, assisted by Millson, when the Stars put up their first. It was a close game, with the score at 3- 2 by the end of the second. Orono's marker came from Robinson, unassisted. The third period was a nail biter. Orono was ahead by only one, on a goal by Allin from Robinson. With 15 seconds, remaining in the game Newcastle scored and sent the game into overtime. Pressure was back-and-forth but finally Orono's Szymczak (from Robinson) put in the winner. This gave Szymczak the hat trick and put the Leafs ahead 4-0 in points. With a possible chance for a sweep of the series on Tuesday Feb. 4, the Stars played hard and scored the first goal of the game. Orono's Dunham scored to tie it (from Sutton), but Newcastle went ahead again at the end of the second to take a commanding 3-1 lead late in the third. However, Orono fought back and got one more with Dunham once again putting it away assisted by Szymczak. The Leafs pressed hard with the goalie out, but were unable to get a tie. This pushed the series to game 4 in Newcastle. The Stars may have lost their steam, as the Leafs were able to score a decisive 5-1 victory to take the series. Orono's goals came from Millson from Szymczak and Dunham, Heerschop from Caruana, Caruana unassisted, Moffat from Bames and Allin, and Millson from Bames. The win went to Martin in net. This victory sent the Leafs to the next round to compete against thé Douro Dukes. The series began February 9 in Douro. Orono's Allin opened the scoring in the first by tipping tipping the point shot of Heerschop. The score remained 1-0 late into the third period when Douro finally cracked Crashley. The game went into overtime with Douro scoring the winner after 5 minutes minutes of play. The series continues continues this Friday night in Orono. Come support your home team. Orono Major Plumbing soaks the competition The Orono Major Plumbing Novice Reps opened up their best of 5 series with a. hard fought 6-5 victory over the division-winning Newcastle team. Orono continued their stellar playoff performance as they came out flying and opened up a quick 3-0 lead. Matt Verkuyl opened the scoring on a nice breakaway goal assisted by Michael Richards. Tyson Robinson made it 2-0 with assists going to Zachary Gibson and Michael Richards. Matt Verkuyl scored another great breakaway goal assisted by Stefan Fabricius and Mitchell Marchbank. Orono seemed in control, but it was far from over. Newcastle would scramble back to tie the game after two periods, turning the final peri od into a see-saw battle. Early in the third, Tyson Robinson would give Orono the lead, letting go a great wrist shot into the top corner. Dylan Dennis then made it a two goal lead as he put a nice shot in the corner. Once again Newcastle would battle back to get within one goal. Evan Rosseau scored the eventual game winner, as he took a nice pass from Dylan Dennis with Zachary Gibson picking up the other assist. Newcastle scored once more making it 6-5. In the final minutes of play, Jacob Dolley made some amazing saves to preserve Orono's victory. Tie and two wins for Major Tyke team The Easton Truck Caps Major Tykes hit their stride this week with a tie and two wins. Last Monday, the Major Tykes travelled to Bowmanville to play McGregor's IDA and came away with a 6-6 tie. Orono's strong net minder was Ian Third. Goal scorers for Easton's were Chris Haass with a hat trick, Connor Macvarish, Jennifer Mercer and Warren Ball. Assists went to Connon. Macvarish, Josh Gallina and Jennifer Mercer. On Friday night, Easton's hosted Ontario Power, Generators and came away with a 5-3 win. Goal scorers were Josh Gallina, Chris Haass, Jennifer Mercer, Ian Third, and Jessica Moore who had an excellent game, scoring her first goal of the year and assisting on another. Congratulations Jessica! Other assists went to Warren Ball, and Josh Gallina. Curtis Stainton did a great job in net stopping some quality shots. Saturday morning saw Easton's back on the ice facing second place Home Building Centre. Easton's stunned the opposition with an 8-4 win. Josh Kelly did another outstanding outstanding goaltending job. Congratulations go out to Jennifer Mercer on her first hat trick of the year. Other goals went to Chris Haass (4), and Warren Ball. Assists went to Josh Gallina (2) and Warren Ball. Other hard-working team members this week included Brittany St. James, Taylor Tyce, Billy Qualtrough, Cavan Willsie and Storm Wolla.
