Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 6 Newcastle Funeral Home battles Fenelon Falls Juveniles split weekend games against Bracebridge The Newcastle Funeral Home Peewees hosted Fenelon Falls on Friday, February 7, 2003. Garrett Klompmaker opened up the scoreboard assisted by Tommy Meester. Tyler Johansen got a hat trick with Tyler Armstrong picking up two assists. Josh McGill got the final goal with only 41 seconds left on the clock, assisted by Matt Dobson. Lucas Martin was clearing the area in front of the net, with Jeremy Caruana digging in the corners. The game ended 5-5. On Sunday night, February 9, 2003 the boys traveled to Fenelon Falls for a win 2-1. Shawn Lowe was between the pipes earning a shut out in the first period. The second period period also ended scoreless. The third period, Fenelon Falls scored with just 13:17 on the clock. Then Tyler Johansen tied it up, assisted by Matt Dobson. Garrett Klompmaker got the winning goal with only 1:26 left on the clock. Fenelon gave it one last shot, but Brock Dunham blocked the shot with only one second left on the clock. Way to go Brock! The defense team of Tommy Meester, Gardner Cole, Jeff Mulder and Je von Staples showed off their slap shots from the blue line. Nick Kuijpers showed some exceptional passing, while Chad Moore was a speedster on skates. The team traveled to Woodville Friday, February 14, 2003, winning 12-2. In the first game they lost 4-2. The offence of the other team was too much for Orono to handle. Connor Whitley and Daniel Benedict scored Orono goals with the lone assist going to Trevor Greenwood. In the second weekend game, everything went Orono's way. Kale Stephens and Jacob Diamond each scored their first goals of season season leading Orono to an 8-0 shutout. The rest of the Orono goals were notched by Ben deBoer, Connor Whitley and Mitchell Trachsler. Assists went to Daniel Benedict and Tate Simpson. Brett Otterbein had his fifth shutout of the season. The Dufferin Aggregates Juveniles are one step closer to the All-Ontario Championship as they have entered the quarterfinals in OMHA playoff action. After disposing of Stirling in a hard-fought, five-game series, the Orono boys headed to Bracebridge to start their quarterfinal series Saturday night. Orono came out in game one firing on all cylinders as they quickly took a 1-0 lead. Colin Organ wired a slapshot home just 34 seconds into the game from Aaron Robinson. Robinson made it 2-0 later as he fired a point shot through a maze of legs and into the back of the net. Chris Field drew the lone assist. Bracebridge drew within one a couple minutes minutes later but Orono responded responded late in the first frame as Tyler Knight scored from Robinson and Jamie Parry. Orono tallied once more before the end of the first as Field scored with 31 seconds remaining from Mark Lemieux and Ryan Homes. The boys kept the goal judge busy as they kept filling the net in the second. Colin Organ potted his second of the game early in the period from Jamie Parry. Jeremy Czechowski made it 6-1 late in the period from Scott Wood and Lemieux. Parry ended the period with a goal of his own from Ricky Howe. Orono took a commanding 7-1 lead to the dressing room and clamped down defensively in the third to take Game One of the series. Game Two was back in Orono Sunday evening. Once again, the Leafs came out flying flying as Jamie Parry made it 1-0 for Orono just 21 seconds into the game. Chris Field assisted on the goal. However, this night was a different story, as the goal parade did not continue. continue. Bracebridge tied the game before the end of the period. The goal parade did not happen happen on this night but the penalty parade did for Orono and it cost them in the second period as Bracebridge scored twice to take a 3-1 lead into the break. Scott Poole held Orono in the game with some huge saves but Bracebridge was too much this night scoring scoring once in the third and clamping down on defence to prevent Orono from getting any real good scoring chances. The game ended at 4-1 and the series is now tied. Orono scored an insurance insurance goal when Denis Beenen and then spotted Jamie Stevens in front for a nice pass and play resulting in a goal. The final score was 4-2 for Orono. Orono's final regular season game was played on February 15 on home ice. Orono needed needed this victory for a chance to get into the first division and they came out victorious. Jamie Stevens put Orono on the scoreboard by coming up with the puck and putting a slap shot past the opposition's goalie. His goal was unassisted. unassisted. The winning goal for Orono was scored when Dustin Armstrong passed back to Michael Whelan who put a slap shot in off the post. The final score was 3-2 for Orono. The team has come a long way since the beginning of the season and is playing excellent hockey. All of the team members should be proud as the coaching staff congratulates them.
