Spring is quickly approaching approaching and we look forward to warmer weather and being outdoors. outdoors. Spring weather also brings us melting snow, rain and the breakup of ice along our rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. During this time of year we can expect higher, faster flowing water along with slippery, slippery, unstable stream banks and extremely cold water temperatures temperatures that can lead to very haz ardous conditions close to any water body. The snow pack has increased substantially over the last few weeks with above normal normal amounts existing for this time of year. The colder than normal temperatures we've been experiencing have also developed significant ice covers covers along our rivers and streams. As temperatures rise through this weekend and into next week the potential for flooding and ice jamming remains significant. The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority continues continues to monitor river and stream conditions and will issue any related flood messages as conditions conditions warrant. Please exercise extreme caution around any water body over the next few weeks and help make this a safe and enjoyable spring. This Public Safety message message is directed to the general general public, but parents and caregivers are especially reminded to alert children of the dangers that exist around area water bodies this time of year.
