54 -- Orôno Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 16,2003 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Easter-time memories eh! This weekend is Easter--a sure sign of Spring and good things to come. A nice long summer, warm and wonderful, wonderful, I hope. Easter Sunday and church with new bonnets and clothes - these are some of my memories memories as a child. When I became an adult, Easter and Spring always had love and romance in the air. One Easter that I vividly remember, happened a few years ago. I attended a corn roast in late September, and met a girl that came from down Halifax way. Her name was Ettie Rankin. She came to Oshawa, Ontario to live with her sister and attend school. She was going through to be a hairdresser and nail technician. technician. I was able to get her phone number and after a few weeks of negotiations, we started to date. We had lots of pleasant times and she started coming out to the farm on a regular basis. That summer 1 had grown a crop of greens on a little patch of land tucked in at the back of the farm. Not being a health food nut, I didn't consume consume any greens, but she consumed consumed them all winter long, it seemed to put her in a very happy mood. On towards Spring I decided decided to get her something special special for Easter, but what it would be I wasn't' sure. As Easter closed in I thought of the perfect gift. I would give her my special rabbit and a diamond necklace that I had acquired in a deal. The rabbit was special as it had been given to me by a magician that was going out of business. business. When I first got the little fellow he was a basket case. He had been in and out of the hat so many times he'd been traumatized. It took a lot of work but he finally turned into a proper little bunny. When Easter morning arrived I had dyed the bunny pink with food colouring and put the necklace around his neck and I presented him to Ettie in a wicker basket. She was more than pleased. Tragedy struck within the week. I came home and what I presumed to be a chicken dinner turned awful. After we had eaten I was to learn that what we had eaten was my beloved rabbit that I had given her for Easter along with the necklace. Ettie just laughed about it but I knew she was gone like last weeks wages. The romance was over. The next day she was on a hound for Halifax or somewhere. The last time I talked to her sister, Ettie was living in Halifax and working in a sardine sardine factory and her boyfriend worked in a bicycle shop. I think of her every Easter and what happened to poor fluffy. Hope added "Valentine, although fairly new to the area, has jumped in feet first to be part of the community." Joint committees not organizations By Jeanne Burnside The Newcastle BIA and the Chamber of Commerce discussed the possibility and ramifications of merging merging the two organizations at last week's meeting. Although they share similar similar goals and projects due overlap, the difficulties of overcoming the stricter geographical guidelines for membership in the BIA make a merger at this time impossible. The attendees, that included members from both organizations, did vote unanimously to form committees to oversee joint projects from members members of both groups. Monthly meetings will remain separate except when both executives, Valentine Lovekin (BIA) and Masood Vatandoust (Chamber of Commerce) deem it necessary. Committee members from their respective organizations organizations can keep each group apprised on the status of projects. This year's agenda includes Easter, Massey Show, Fall Festival, Halloween, Moonlight Madness/Tree Lighting and Breakfast with Santa. Both groups would welcome more members to assist on project committees. Mui,v|i i Mi I nii Mi ii' I ..H.. i". ' 11 1 i "I '■> I !,. i,, i . i !
