fltij g A Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 30,2003 - 6 - % Excellent finish for Newtonville racer in Boston Marathon Simply qualifying for the Boston Marathon is a notable achievement for any serious runner. Newtonville resident Jason Hansen made the most of his opportunity this past Easter Monday and placed an impressive impressive 1,185th out of more than 17,000 racers who competed in the annual athletic extravaganza. extravaganza. The 27-year-old firefighter who works out of the Bowmanville station, was pleased with his result but admits the crowds were an unforeseen stumbling block. "I wanted to go under three hours, but with so many people Heartbreak Hill was a challenge with its gruelling upgrades it was hard to get a rhythm going. I kept , dodging people and it was difficult to grab water." It took him 3 hours, 6 minutes minutes and 51 seconds to cover the 26 mile course. Just getting to the start line after the pistol took a full three minutes due to the tremendous press of runners runners and spectators. During the entire marathon sounds of cheering, clapping and occasional bell ringing rarely ceased, says Hansen. It was a real circus style atmosphere, with as much hype and buzz as any Olympic event. "My first qualifying race was in Toronto with about 2,000 people and I thought that was big. This was insane." To qualify for the race, runners runners had to finish a similar 26 mile route in under 3 hours 20 minutes. Hansen's mother, Linda, who cheered from the sidelines in Boston, said the course had challenging sections such as the famed "Heartbreak Hill" a The NewcastleYouth League Bowling Awards were presented earlier this month and the senior Pin Earners are pictured here.
