The Orono Public School teacher was nominated by her grade one student, Connor Hegan. Megan wrote to the Times to tell us: "My teacher's name is Mrs. Caron. I think Mrs. Caron is the best teacher because she treats us nicely. She gives us math and I love math. I like music time with her. She is an excellent excellent music teacher. I like the trips she plans for us. I really do like the reading homework she gives us. She is fun and plays "Mother Chick" with us at recess. She is a very good teacher. " Both surprised and honoured, Caron accepted flowers presented presented to her by Hegan, donated by the Apple Blossom Shop in Orono. Caron has been teaching for close to 25 years and still enjoys the challenge and personal growth that comes from spending her days helping children accomplish all that they can. "What I like about this job is that I am learning constantly; constantly; quite often from the students," students," said Caron, her contagious contagious smile flooding across her natural face. When Caron was in her early 20's trying to decide what to do with her life, teaching teaching wasn't even a consideration. consideration. "I swore I would never be a teacher," said Caron with a laugh. "Because everyone in my family was in the teaching profession." She even refused to go to teacher's college when she was offered an opening-but fate had a different plan. Since she had a degree in music people people started asking her to teach, and kept asking her because she did such a good job. Eventually she quit fighting fighting destiny went back to school and became a full-time teacher. She hasn't looked back since. There have been some incredible moments in her career, when she really felt she helped a student overcome major obstacles in their lives. "I believe that with the right amount of time, attention and care, every child can be successful in life," said Caron. Those are the moments she lives for, those are the times her vocation holds true meaning. meaning. Over the years students students have written her 'thank-you' notes which she keeps as a heart warmer for the down days, when things don't seem to be going well. The letter from Connor will be another keepsake to keep the smile on her face and the light in her eyes. Next year Caron will be in Italy for a couple years, following her husband who is in the military, but she hopes to be back in Orono eventually, knowing she will be hard pressed to find a community as great and a staff as supportive supportive as she has here. Being appreciated in your work is one of the finest things. This monthly column has been a joy to do, especially especially knowing how hard the teachers work and what an impact they make on young lives.
