Clarington crow tests positive for West Nile virus WHITBY, ON, June 10, 2003 - Durham Region Health Department reports that a dead crow picked up on June 3 in the Municipality of Clarington has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The crow was submitted for testing testing on June 5 to the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre in Guelph. Test results received on June 9 confirmed confirmed the crow as positive positive for WNV. "This is the first crow of the season to test positive for West Nile virus in Durham Region," says Ross MacEachern, Manager, Environmental Health with the Health Department. "We will continue to submit dead crows for testing at this time. As a result of this positive test result, West Nile virus surveillance surveillance activities will be increased in the area where the crow was found." The Health Department Department began WNV surveillance surveillance activities on April 14. To date, the Heath Department has submitted 15 dead crows for testing. Durham Region's 2003 West Nile virus surveillance surveillance activities include a larviciding program for roadside catch basins and stagnant surface surface water running from May 25 to September 25. Adult mosquito trapping began the week of May 26 at locations across Durham Region. Captured adult mosquitoes mosquitoes will be identified, identified, counted and tested for the virus. The Health Department is also conducting a WNV surveillance study in storm water management management ponds across Durham. This study is the first of its kind in Ontario. The Health Department Department is also involved in WNV public education activities with local municipalities. Public presentations have already occurred in Scugog and Uxbridge. The next presentation is scheduled for June 25 in Clarington and planning planning is underway for a session in Brock Township. These sessions sessions are open to the public and are scheduled scheduled in response to requests made by the municipalities. WNV is a mosquito- borne disease spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on the blood of a bird that carries the virus. The disease is not passed from person to person or from bird to person.
