Fifty years ago, on June 3, 1953, my father, Peter S i k m a, boarded the ship "Groote- beer" in the Nether- lands bound for Canada. With farming in his blood, Holstein Frisian on his mind (and maybe a wife), and a sum of money in his pocket, Canada was literally an immigrant field of dreams which did not fall short for this 21 year-old. After leaving his post as a cook in the Dutch Air Force, and saying farewell to his parents and six siblings, siblings, Peter made his momentous boat trip, landing in Halifax.- Having taken the train to Toronto, Peter slept that first night on a bench in Union Station before continuing continuing on to London where he met up with his sister who had immigrated a year earlier. earlier.
