Travelling with our youngest daughter, we spent three glorious weeks in beautiful Newfoundland. Stopping our first day in LaSalle, New Brunswick, we enjoyed an excellent meal at the local Irving Station. We found these service stations stations gave excellent service service to out of province travellers and had very friendly, helpful people to assist you at any time. The ferry left Sydney, Nova Scotia at approximately approximately 9 p.m. arriving in Newfoundland at 3 a.m. The ride over was in calm waters and the ferry had an excellent crowd on board. However, landing landing so early in the morning morning posed a slight problem... problem... all the stores and restaurants were not open yet! The scenery of Newfoundland is breathtaking breathtaking in its beauty! Snow-capped mountains and lush forests were a sight to see. I was amazed to see so many churches throughout the many small communities. Each town seemed to have a least five or six. In one town, all the by Isabelle Challice local churches have come together to help restore an old Catholic church. During our trip, the friendly folks who live there were a joy to meet. Former travellers told us that we would find the meals to be extraordinary extraordinary and we found this to be true. You can almost guarantee that you will come home with a few extra pounds (but this can't be helped!) Our overnight accommodations were fabulous! There were motels, hotels and even lovely cabins to choose from. The 'Frontier Cottages' boast brand new log cabins as their accommodations. The 'Brittoner' is a special bed and breakfast in a delightful location. The 'Carbonear Motel' also provides private cottages cottages for those who enjoy this type of accommodation. Our favourite stop was in the city of St. John's. This is where our driver Peter was bom and raised. It is a thriving thriving Canadian city, with a population of almost 160,000 people people and of course is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. We saw several several new homes being built, as well as numerous numerous shopping malls. Unfortunately, as all great trips must do, they have to end. Our ferry ride home was through much rougher waters (which this traveller did not enjoy) and during the daylight hours. There are many quotes about the province but there are two that we enjoyed: "Again, this is the place where sky, land, and water embrace like old friends." And, "When God designed Creation and drew up his 'Master Plan', he spend 1/2 hour more creating Newfoundland." Having enjoyed three lovely weeks in Newfoundland, we would recommend to anyone to plan a trip to this wonderful province.
