The driver sustained injuries to his left shoulder and upper back, and was released from Bowmanville hospital the same day. No charges were laid. O'Toole makes the grade MPP-elect, John O'Toole admits that while this was the hardest election campaign he'd ever been involved in, his main opposition ran a very respectful campaign. Where the provincial campaign campaign that ended in Thursday's election was often criticized for its negativity, the local Durham Riding campaign was polite. "We ran a good campaign," said Liberal Candidate Garry Minnie who congratulated O'Toole on his 'clean campaign.' campaign.' "We did everything we could for the last six months; it's clearly not our time." Minnie received 18,591 votes which represents 36.8 per cent of the votes cast Thursday in the Durham Riding. As the Liberals swept to victory provincially, P.C. candidate candidate O'Toole managed to hang on to his seat with 50.5 per cent of the popular vote. "Durham Region is prosperous prosperous which means people don't want to change," said Minnie Thursday night. "The opposition was more organized this time," stated O'Toole Friday morning. Having served on the School Board and on Clarington Council, O'Toole now enters his third term as member of Provincial Parliament - this time as a member of the opposition. "We'll actually work harder," stated O'Toole. Teresa Williams, local NDP candidate collected 6,266 votes, translating into 12.4 per cent of votes cast in the riding. Gordon MacDonald of the Green Party, whom O'Toole said was very impressive, got 1,177 votes - .2 per cent. Kathy McKeever of the Freedom Party took .1 per cent of the vote with 695 ballots ballots cast in her favour. High school students with the Kàwartha Pine Ridge School Board held their own provincial election. Results from the Clarke High School mock provincial eletion, held last Wednesday differed from the provincial and the Durham Riding results. At Clarke, the Liberals recieved the most votes with 34.0 per cent, NDP with 23.6 per cent, P.C. with 21.8 per cent, Green Party with 13.9 per cent, Freedom Party with 1.9 percent with 4.9 per cent casting a protest vote. Voter turnout for the school vote was much higher than the provincial average. All but 100 students turned out to vote. Participation board-wide O'TOOLE continued page 4 Guides pian food drive Responding to a plea for help from the food bank, the Second Orono Girl Guides will be conducting a food drive this Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The girls will be knocking on doors within the village asking asking for donations of canned and non-perishable foods for the Clarington East Food Bank. As the group will not be able to get to all the homes in the village, donations can be dropped off at the Hair Line, 5312 Main Street, Orono during during business hours.
