Wednesday, March 31, 2004 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Public comments sought on moving low-level radioactive waste away from Lake Ontario PORT HOPE - Over the next two weeks, Open Houses are being held in Orono, New- onville and Newcastle to gather gather comments on the recommendation recommendation for safe long-term management of historic low- level radioactive waste currently currently located at the Port Granby Waste Management Facility in southeast Clarington. The concept to move the historic low-level radioactive waste away from its current location on the shoreline of Lake Ontario to a new state-of- the-art above-ground mound facility on an available local site ranked highest in the study of alternative means. During the past 20 months, many ideas for long-term management management approaches were gathered from the public and from around the world, studied in detail and evaluated by the project team. The resulting short list of three concepts was publicly presented in June 2003. Those concepts were then subjected to detailed examinations and comparative evaluation. The waste relocation relocation concept emerged as the best option in terms of public health and safety, environmental environmental protection, technical reliability reliability and cost effectiveness. The studies also resulted in a recommended route for transporting construction materials to the new facility site north of Lakeshore Road, using an up-graded Elliott Road and its road allowance, Concession Road 1 and Newtonville Road from Highway 401. Use of Lakeshore Road would be minimized. "By holding these Open Houses in three centres throughout Clarington's Ward 4, we are hoping many residents residents will come out to discuss the Project. There will be information on the new facility conception the transportation routes and on health and safety considerations," said Glenn Case, Port Hope Area Initiative Project Director. Kawartha Pineridge School Board Trustee Cathy Abraham said following the meeting that she was really pleased with the plan to put an all-way stop at the "T" intersection of Glass Court and Bridges Drive. A meeting held at the School on Marchand initiated by school representatives outlined outlined the need to alleviate traffic traffic congestion before and after school. "We knew we would be dealing with this because of the growth of the subdivision north west of the school," said Abraham. According to Councillor Don MacArthur the school board is responsible for creating creating the congestion at Glass Court. "In their decision to close the Beaver Street entrance, they have caused this problem we attempted to solve," stated MacArthur who sits on the Clarington Traffic Management Advisory Committee. A better solution would be to open up the Beaver Street entrance at the south west corner of the school property according to MacArthur. "This is the best Engineering Services could do under the circumstances," he stated. In addition to introducing the all-way stop at Glass Court and Bridges Drive, a Kiss-N-Go area will be established established on school property to reduce the need for parents to find parking and walk onto school property and still satisfy satisfy their safety concerns. While Engineering Staff could not support the request for additional crossing guards, they will move the existing adult crossing guard at the corner of Beaver and Edward Street east to Edward and Glass Court this September in preparation of the influx of students from that subdivision not yet completed.» The request for speed CONGESTION see page 8 TAHHÎ Thursday, April 1st 10:00 AM All Welcome Class runs to June 24 $40.00 Dr. Schroeder's Chiropractic and Exercise Centre To enroll, call Pat 905-983-9475 Chocolate Jgaster funnies Hand-made on the premises from the finest Belgian Chocolate.
