durhamregion.com The Citizen June 18, 2015 3 Lots to be proud of in Brooklin For me the Brooklin Spring Fair marks the start of great summer activity in our beloved village of Brooklin. The 2015 fair was very successful and was truly a "fun" community engagement event that has endured as a long-standing Brooklin tradition. For the last 104 years the parade, and longer for the fair, has been an integral part of the social fabric of Brooklin. The Brooklin Ashburn Myrtle Lions Club will be holding its third annual community nine-hole golf tournament on Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club. For ticket or sponsorship information, contact Michael Argue at 905-655-7912 or michael_argue@hotmail.com. Donations and gifts are accepted. All proceeds from this charitable event go to the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre and to BAM Lions projects. Registration begins at 2 p.m. with a shotgun start at 3:30 p.m. The tournament promises to be a fun event with a signature barbecue buffet and prizes at 6:15 p.m. Space is limited to the first 80 players so early registration is strongly encouraged. On Saturday, June 20, the BAM Lions, along with the Brooklin Rotary Club, will be helping the 1847 Bistro with its Beerfest, which promises to be a taste tester's delight. Meanwhile, I'm certain all of Brooklin joins our Oshawa neighbours in saluting the Oshawa Generals on a tremendous effort to become 2015 Memorial Cup champions. When Anthony Cirelli scored his second goal during the first overtime period of the Memorial Cup championship game, I jumped for joy. With several outstanding saves by star goalie Ken Appleby, the Generals pushed a strong Kelowna Rockets team into overtime. I was so proud of not just the players but the parents and coaches and staff behind the scenes. Many years of driving players to 5 a.m. practices takes place to get to the point of being crowned Canadian junior hockey's national champions. Thank you to our Generals for making us so very proud. As coach D.J. Smith kept telling his players "the right leg goes over the boards first when we win" -- and win they did. I encourage readers to send me local ideas and story lines of interest to the Brooklin community. I can be reached at 905-259-5480 via text or by e-mail at mcgrorey25@rogers.com. Until next time, please drive safely in Brooklin. -- Jim McGrorey is a Brooklin resident, chairman of the Brooklin Spring Fair Parade and volunteer and events co-ordinator for the Whitby Road Watch Com- mittee.
