TENNYSON, Snail we Wath oar Shesp ? What the Live Sto :k Journal says of sheep washing. This annually recurring query among sheep breeders has again come to the surface. It may be that it will remain unanswered for an- other decade ; but our information is to the effect that each year finds its converts to the non-washing policy. Arguments can be found for both practices -- the preponderance of those in favor of washing being fur- nished by the wool buyers, who fail sometimes (though not so generally of late as in former years) to offer reasonable encouragement for put- ting wool in No. 1 fleece-washed or- der. An additional argument in the sumo direction is found in the fact that the commission man who sells the farmer's clip usually makes bis charge for such service at so much per pound, making jt more expen- sive to sell a fleece of wool "in the dirt" «han when washed. To these may be added the item of increased freight charges, which comes out of the grower, whether he sells athome or ships to a broker. These sub- stantially are all the arguments in favor of washing sheep before shear- ing. Against these are urged the facts : , The labor, which is always valua- ble in the season of sheep-washing. there being so many demands for it in other directions. 2, The injury to health which often result from standing for hours waist-deep in water. 3, The damage to the sheey, from the inevitable crowding and rough handling during the process : and usflering from cold one or two days thereafter. So palpable is the latter, that no breeder of choice stock--high priced animals--can be induced to subject his favorites to the ordeal. 4, Wool is admitted to be lkept better when stored in an un washed condition, and if held for any considerable time to take dyes bet- ter. 5, All wools, no matter how thoroughly washed on the sheep': back, be scoured before working --so nothing is saved the manufacturer in the way of jabor 6, The manufzcturer who bis stock of raw material ferent parts wondd s uniform condition, have to gathers from dit ureitin a more the facilities for washing differ'in every state, and often in different of the same state: 7, There would. be no anuoyance from the thRowing out of fleeces indiiferently washed, or portions those that by accideut have got in man unwashed condition. This latter consideration is important, in view of difficulty--we may say im- possibility--of washing any number of sheep to a uniform cleanness. Even it this were done they need all to be sheared at would the same time, to preserve the uniformity; for the grease raises rapidly under the warm sun of the late spring and early sumn.er days. Recurring to the arguments pro and con, sbove enumerated, it will be noticed that most of the reasons flecce-washing are most readily met and answered than are those against it : and although not intending or +) desiring to convince any one against we nevertheless feel ranted in bringing to tiie m nds of our readers a subject which they will soon Le called to decide for his will, war 5| themselves. S-- HURON AND QUEBEC RAIL- . WAY. Dear Sir,--The object of this Company is to ran an independent line of railway laid with steel rails from the harbor at Gorich, to Or- angeville, and also from the city of London, via Stratford to Orangeville direct, having a junction at that town, thence by Air Line to New- market, Uxbridge, Lirdsay, Peter- boro', Oftawa, Montreal and, Quebéc making it shorter to Ottawa by 100 and Quebec by about 70 miles, than by the pre-ent Grand Trunk route. being a saving ot from 7 tol0 cts per Iu hel on wheat and in freight ; also 83 per heed on passengers, besides six hours of time saved.
