'nest as soon as hens or turkeys heat of the fowls causes the sulpher to penetrate every part of their bodies, every louse is killed, and, as all nits are hatched within ten days. when the mother leaves the nest with her she is perfectly free from nits or lice, 1t is convenient to have two hens hatching at the same time, since if accidents happen "the two broods ay be united. Again, on the hatching day it frequently occurs that, to prevent the newly born chicks being crushed by eggs. that are behind time, it is desirable to give all that are hatched to one hen, while the other takes charge of the * eggs alone. Not only docs this give security to the chicks, who run some hazard of being crushed if they are kept for any prolonged time under the mother; but the unhatched eggs also stand a better chance. For when a hen finds chickens under her she sits higher from the eggs, and less warmth is afforded them at the time they require most. --_------------ Spps's Cocoa. --arateruL AND CoM- wyorriNa.--"By a thorough knowledge ot the aatural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by a careful ap- plication of the fine properties of well-select. ed cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided our break- fast tables with a delicately flavoured bever- age which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. In proof of this position we have only to point to the many First Prizes awarded us--at the last Provincial trial of Ontario, and mary county trials which have taken place all over Canada, within the last few years. OUR TRIUMPH COMBINED MACHINE with late improvements, is all that can be desired in a combined machine, and cannot fail to meet all the requirements of purchasers. Signed, THOMAS HOLLOWAY, London, January 1st, 1877. THE BEAUTIFUL INDIAN MAIDENS, The maidens of the famous Seneca tribe of Indians who once roamed over the pic- turesque and beautiful valleys and lofty hills of theupper Allegheny river (now the famous oil regions of Peary] via) were noted among ull the neighboring tribes for the wealth and beauty of their tresses, which were of remarkable length and ex- quisite fineness of texture, and in color so black, that the simile of the raven's wing was hardly a just comparison; an elegant background that brought out the olive brown complexion of the maidens, and formed an exquisite and charming picture ghtful to be- hold. Why their hair was of such rare beauty and of such extreme length was a deep, puzzling mystery to the maidens of all the neighboring tribes, and was a source of continual jealousies on their part. It has long remained a mystery, and would no doubt have died away 'altogether with the rest of the Indian traditions had nof the discovery) of petroleum oil furnish the cue, and mankind now possesses the great secret which had remained sealed within the Third Sand rock of oblivion, until released by the hand of scientific in- dustry, it gushes forth in treasures of petrol eum fo the world. But the knowledge was. practically useless to the prematurely bald and gray, as noonein civilized society could tolerate the use of refined petroleum as a dressing for the hair. But the skill of one of our chemists has overcome the difficult and, by a process known only to himselt he has, after very elaborate and costly ex- perimenis, succeeded in deodorizing pe- troleum, which renders it susceptible of being handled as daintily as the famous eau de cologne. The experiments with the deodorized liquid on the human hair were attended with the most astonishing results. A few applications, where the hair was thin and falling, gave remarkable tone and vigor to the scalpand hair. Every particle of dan- druff disappears on the first or second dres- sing, and the liquid, so searching in its na- ture, seems to penetrate to the roots atonce, and set up aradical change from the start. Itis well known that the most beautiful col ors are made from petroleum, and by sonte mysterious operation of nature the use of this article gradually imparts a beautiful light brown color to the hair, which, by' continued use, deepens to a black, The color remains permanent for an indefinite length of time, and the change is so grad- ual that the most intimate friends can scarcely detect its progress. In a word, it is the most wonderful discovery of the age, and well calculated to make the prema- turely bald and gray rejoice. The name. Carboline has been given to the article, and is put upin a neat and attractive man- ner, and sold by all dealers in drugs and' medicines.
