_ . Changing Their Base. British manufacturers are becoming un- easy at the outlook in the maufacturing line © An extensive mautfacturing firm of man- _ chester is making offers for the purchase of large | cotton mills in Massachusetts. A wealthy company ¢f English iron masters are now erecting cxtensive iron works at Pittsburg, Tenn. Such movements are Ly no means encournging to British workmen. ! ---- r------ A I ------ Church Funds Squandered. MonreraL, March 18 --A young man named George Maynard, agent for the con- struction of tbe Cote St. Luc Protestant church has gone into difficulties. He col- lected large sums of money and organized excarsiohs on behalf of the building fund of the church but "failed to hand over the pro- ceeds to the trustoes, and the money appears to have been squandered. Some $3,000 has been taken in all. ------ Sad News from Gloucester. Grovcesten, Mass , March 13. --The Cape Aon Aavertiser confirms the Uelief that thirteen vessels of the Gloucester fishing fleet went down in the February gales with 143 men, leaving 53 widows and 137 father. Jess children, Home of these vessels have Deen absent from five to six weeks, and fo, | their safety there can scarcely be ground for hope. Others have been gone a shorter time. Vessels whose recent safe arrival excited a hope that the other missing eraft might yet return, prove not to have been in a dangerous locality. Subscriptions have. been started for the widows and orphans. ---------- The Glories of a Throne. New Yong, March 13 --The Ieralds Tashkend special gives details of the Ameer's death, as reported by a Russian surgeon, the only European who witnessed it. Three pretenders to the throne spring up in Tash-kourgon®the night be- fore the Ameer died. Among them was Hamid, a nephew of Shere Ali, who was known to be in communication with the Eoglish. Hamid's party, urged, no doubt, by English agents, began active operations on the evening before the Ameer's death, -- Hamid compelled the other two pretenders to flee, but the garrison of Balkh espoused their cause and proclaimed Yakoolh Khan Ameer. Reprisals were immediately begun against the party of Hamid, and all his officers were massacred with the consent o the victors, On the following day, Feb, 2, the house of the Governor was given up to be looted, The women of the Larem were abandoned to the soldiers and general pil- lage followed all over the town. This state of anarchy lasted five days. The English party is crushed by the patriotic party. ---------- A New Mode of Aiding the Poor. The Cobourg Sentinel says--* We think it would be good idea for our Council to charge an admission fee, that is if there is going to be as much fun at all succeeding meetings and devote the proceeds towards the benefit of the poor of the town. ------ettl ------ en The Thomas cat sat upon the fence Sat yellin' jest like thuoder ; A Lritkbat took him 'tween the eyes And caused him to knock under. No more he'll make us curse and swear, And brickbats at bim fire: He's sashaycd from this world of tears-- He's gone to meet Mariar, S------ « What do you think of me? asked an old bachelor of a witty girl. ¢ 1 think you are a singular being,' was the reply. et ---- ee To Core Conys.--Take a lemon and roll it till soft ; cut a thin slice and bind it on | the corn at night, In the morning, if white | and disintegrated, pull it out with your finger mail. Sometimes several applica- tions will be nccessary. ------------ Wpps's Cocoa. ~--GRATEFUL AND CoM- | orTiNG.-- "By a thorough knowledge ot the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by a carcful ap- plication of the fine propertics of well-select- od cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided our break- fast tables with a delicately flavoured bever- age which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. It is Ly the judicious use of such ar- ticles of dict that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to discase. Hundreds of subtle maladies are floaling around us ready to attack wherever there is a weak point. We may escape many a fatal shaft by keeping ourselves well fortified with pure plood and a properly nourished frame." -- Civil Service Gazette.--Sold only in packets labelled--"Jauss Errs & Co, Homeopathic Chemists, 48, Threadneedle Strect, and 170) Piccadilly, London." eet GE lee Frees of Cost. THE WALKER . HOUSE whether for extent or quality of accommo- dations is equalled by few Hotels in the Province and surpassed by none out of the best cities, Commercial Travelers, the Traveling OFFICE OF THE BROWN & PATTERSON MPG CO'Y. WHITBY, ONT. TO THE PUBLIC. I senting our Twent d Annual Catal of Agricultural Fmpl to the THEO RE for the year 18717, we do so with more than an ordinary degree of prideand confidence, from the marked favor and patronage conferred upon us, and the steady and in- ing demand from year to year for our new celebrated Farm lmplements. We shall continne as heretofore. as manufacturers, to make a Specialy of Agricultural Machinery--the Johnston Self-raking Reaper, the Triumph Combined Reaper and Mower, the Cayuga Mower, the Young Canada Mower, and our new Whitby Harvester claiming a large share of our time ard attention. For the last twenty wo years we have to the manufacture and operation of the variot remedying defects, modifying and correcting errors, strengthening we: proportioning every part as our increasing experience has suggested. We employ only the best mechanical skill, and our machines pass under the most careful supervision and scrutiny--every detail being subjeptsd to the severest eriticism--and each machine is thoroughly tested before leaving our works, to prove the completeness of every part. and there is no difficulty in putting them in operation by any person of moderate 'mechanical ity. : : i machinery has been selected and constructed with a special reference to the manu- i tools having been made for this particular purpose, and not adapted for other work, and our workmen are educated up to the wants and requirements of our manfacture--obtaining a thorough knowledge of the construction of our machines, and are thus enabled to obtain a higher degree o skill and proficiency than where general manu- facturing is carried on. : 2 bled to introduce a more perfect system into all the departments of We are, therefore, enal e de) | manufacture, adding nat only to the perfection of the work, but also to the rapidity of its exe- cution--and a consequent reduction of cost. . This principle is regarded necessary in a well regulated establishment, and we are enabled to turn out our machines with a higher degree of perfection, and at prices so low as absolutely to defy competition. The Johnston Self-'Raking Reaper is now so well known as a Single Reaper, that a word of commendation would almoat seem su- perfluous, but as there are many claiming to manufacture this machine who have adliered to the old original Johnston machine, without Keeping up to the improvements, that justice to ourselves and patrons require of us to state that we have modified it in almost every essential part, and for strength, durability, and equality of cut, in every wind and condition of grain; lightness of draught and ease of manazement--the "Johnston," as manufactured by us--stands pre-eminently ahead of all other reapers. In proof of this position we have only to point to the many First Prizes awarded us--at the Inst Provincial trial of Ontario, and mary county trials which have taken place all over Canada, within the last few years. OUR TRIUMPH COMBINED MACHINE with late improvements, is all that can be desired ina combined machine, and cannot fail to meet all the requirements of purchasers. Our Improved Cayuga Chief, Jr., and our Young Janada Mowers are both first class machines--constrtucted almost wholly of Tron and Steel. The Cayuga Jr. has a rear cut, and the Young Canada a front cut; both strong, durable machines, and not'ex- celled by any machines in the market for quality of cut, durability, lightness of dra't, adapta- bility, and ease of management. OUR NEW "WHITBY HARVESTER." As the country has become better adapted to machinery, and many of our farmers have be- come skilled in the uge of machines, a growing demand has sprung up tor a Light, Durable, First-Class Reaper. Alive to the requirements of the day, we have succeeded in inventing a machine witha Wrought Iron Frame, with the least possible gearing--with large, broad-faced drive wheel,-- and so constructed that the frame and table tilt-at the same time, thereby keeping the pitman always in line with the knife. The rakes are driven directly from the main shaft--there being no perceptible side draft, and no weight upon the horses necks. We are confident that we have succeeded in inventing the most perfect Reaper, taking itin all its parts, that has ever been produced. We have applied for letters patent, and shall hold our invention, for our own exclusive manufacture, and we respectfully suggest to intending purchasers, that they should see this machine before giving their orders for the coming harvest. The * Whitby Harvester" weighs, all told, 600 pounds, but being made principally of the best quality ofiron and steel, and from its inzenions and compact construction, it combines the strength and durability of the heavier machines. All our machines are fully warranted. With this list of machines, we feel confident that we can mect every requirement, and we respecifully solicit a trial of our machines, believing that we can furnish a better machine for the money than can be obtained clsewhere. iven our most careful and undidvided attention us machines in use, sifting out the best points, points, adapting and Respectfully Yours, BROWN & PATTERSON MP'G CO.
